New 220 gallon build

What is the difference between a return pump and an inline pump?

In my tank the job they do and the GPH they produce....Return pump is a Barracuda and the in line is a Dart.

What is the difference between running ozone and an UV unit?

One provides Ozone to the system, one kills things with ultra violet light.

What is the difference between a fresh water tank and a salt water tank? (haha)

The livestock your able to keep. Keeping corals in fresh water tanks is much harder unless they are the plastic ones. There are some pretty nice sponge bob square pants items available to keep in fresh water systems though

;)

KurtsReef,
Wow I didn't think it would be quite that high. Not sure I am ready to make the jump quite yet after seeing your listing of the $$$$. I thought I was getting close to having enough to get started. Guess I will have to buy a few more penny jars, haahaa.
Thanks for the response.

It ended up running me quite a bit more than I expected. Did not plan on buying new rock had planned on using the rock from my old system then changed my mind. Did not originally plan on getting a skimmer that large...the little things add up as well.

Did not get to taking photos yesterday, but took some today. This is a shot that was 5 taken vertically and merged together, need to take my time and do it with more attention to detail.

I added the PAR readings from the reef crawl too it also

Is there a site that discusses/shows different corals and their par requirements?

Thanks guys.

The reflectors I am using are not "Lumen Arc III's" or Lumen Arc's but a newer product called "Lumen Brights". I am pretty sure Randy told me that when I picked them up, but I continued to use the incorrect name as that was the product I was originally trying to get.

Just in case anyone was looking to get the same units. I think the biggest difference is the number of panels these have 8 sides and the lumen arc's had fewer sides but about the same sized reflector.

This is the same reflector that Randy has over the new 'look down' tank in the coral room.

Kurt, I love the tank. I'm glad I was able to see it in person.

The most striking thing is the sheer brightness! corals looked great, the blue really pops on that acro.

Also, you are a Houdini! The right stack defies gravity.

Thanks Kent.

The left side fell today. Bought a powerhead to add some flow around the green slimer that will not extend its polyps for me...that was suggested as a possible problem and the amount of light should not be an issue. Put the head in and decided to move the coral as well....trying to place it in a rock knocked the pile so it had to be redone, total different look now on that side with more caves under it as well. Will get a shot of it tomorrow, its 'sleepy time' in the tank right now and that will cause enough disturbance with the fish deciding on their new bed time spots that used that portion of the tank.

That sucks is everything ok?:eek1:

It did not fall hard, I moved a rock that I thought was not weight bearing and the entire thing shifted making the points of the rockwork I specifically made it for not work anymore, such as the tonga branch raising up out and toward the center was laying on the ground. A couple SPS braches got broken, tips broken off but nothing that should cause too much stress. Lights went out while I was fixing, so will see if what I ended up with works or not tomorrow.

Well, decided to redo the rockwork quite a bit on the left making more caves and passages beneath the 60lb huge rock. Placed one tonga cluster that was over the rock underneath supporting it. I also took a couple of the large live rock pieces from the refugium that had all the solid green zoa's on them and used a bow saw to 'shave' off the polyps with about 1/2 inch of rock still attached to them and used those in the landscaping as well.

Entire aquarium, with a black backdrop behind it.

The left side a little overexposed to show some of the caves created over there

You can also see the new power head, not liking it. Does not produce a whole lot of current IMO especially for its huge ugly size...but it is adding some current so will stay somewhere in the tank until I decide to spend more money on something like the vortechs or tunze pumps.

I saw the Banggai Cardinals eat some today, put only small krill (frozen that were thawed out) in and they did eat a bit.

Its been about 4 months since I added fish to the new display, at least two months since I added the Bartletts Anthias among other known jumpers..

Today I finally built the screens to cover the tank, feel a bit safer now./

Oh, the two Banggai's purchased from salt water paradise died...I think of starvation. One much earlier than the other.

Picked up two from that fish place, both feed on frozen/flake/cyclopeeze so hopeful they will survive.

Still lookin great Kurt. One question, I know those are 400watt halides up there, but bulbs are in those sockets? Just curious as I'm tryin to figure out what new ones I want :)

Well, not sure why but both of those Banggai's died some time between this morning and when I got home from work. Found one body, the other is no where to be seen...clean up crew doing their job perhaps.

watched the fish eat more than enough, not sure what the cause of death may have been. :(

Do you know if they were wild caught or captive bred?

I've heard of the wild caught specimens just going belly up for no apparent reason.

Keep us posted.

I am not sure, the ones from SWP were wild caught the guy helping me at the fish place did not seem to know much about them.
