well its been awhile been really busy with work. tank is doing great. added two corals and a six line wrasse. one problem im having is with my protien skimmer. i came home from work today and the chamber the intake pipe is in was almost dry and the skimmer was sucking air. the middle chamber was also low. when i turn the skimmer off and restart it the water level returns and its over flowing to the final chamber. why is the skimmer doing this
Never had that problem with mine. Although mine has started produces some micro bubbles lately. It started only when I fed and lasted for 5 minutes or so but now it's fairly constant.
Anyways, I'm wondering if there isn't a great seal either on the elbows for the intake or where the intake meets the pump inside? Is the intake in a chamber where the water drops and maybe the water level is dropping below the bottom of the intake hose causing it to pull in air with the water? Just some wild guesses but I can't think of anything else.
Are you sure you're priming it fully when you're starting it? I have to plug it in while the air hose is in a cup full of tank water to get it going. Plugging the air hose with my hand didn't do the trick. Let us know if you're able to figure it out.
not sure i was clear on my question. the chamber on the tank just to the left of the center chamber is where i have the intake for the skimmer. this is the chamber that had bearly any water in it which i dont understand how. almost like the skimmer was using more water than the overflow was putting back into the middle chamber. that is why it was sucking air. i hope this helps out a bit.
Oh gotcha. Yeah I would say that your flow through the media basket slowed down enough that the pump in the skimmer drew more than it was getting from through the overflow.
What are you currently running in the media basket? I used to chemipure in a bag, purigen and carbon but I found that it was impossible to maintain enough flow as the micron bags picked up sediment.
How often are you replacing your filter floss/pad?
How are you topping off fresh water and how often?
just a little update. i added a few more coals and one more fish. also i wasnt satisfied with the lighting color so i went and ordered an AI sol blue today. i want a more blue look to the tank and the stock jbj led wasnt cutting it. i will post pics of the new fish and corals and light once i have it up and running. what % should i start the new light out at. alot of people seem to be starting around 30%. i cant wait till the light gets here.
I would think going from LED to another LED you'd probably be fine starting it at 50%. I just upgraded from a Kessil A150 to an A350 which has 3X the wattage and I'm starting it at 50% with no issues. Post some pics when you mount the light and good luck with it. I think you'll like the open top.
That is a lot of snails for a 28 gallon tank - especially the turbos and astraeas. I tried having that many snails in my 65 and 80 gallon tanks at one time or another. Found that most died over time, and I ended up with 3-4 left (total of both types), no matter how many times I added more. Finally figured out that they were starving, and my tanks couldn't support that level of snails.
one question about a coral i have. i got a frag of a green monti-cap and i have it placed mid tank on my pro led and the green is fading and not as bright as when i got it about a week ago. i tested my water and everything is in good range. also i have a what looks like a blue cats paw and it turned some what brown. im wondering if its cause too much light or not enough. hopefully when my ai sol blue comes tomorrow it will help color them up.
I also had a monti in my tank that is bleaching. I will see what the findings are on why yours is bleaching. I moved mine lower in my tank and it's too soon to tell.
ai sol blue will be here today!!!!!!!!! how low can i mount it to the tank because the tank is in my living room and next to my tv. i dont want to be blinded by light while sitting on the couch. or i could try to put some sort of shield on two sides so i cant see the leds?
ups brought me a little present today. ai sol blue cant wait till tomorrow to get it up and running. still trying to figure out how to mount it above my tank. i will post pics when its running.
A few shots with the new light up and running. this light is pretty sweet. i started running it at 25-35-35 to see how my corals do. i think the jbj pro light was too much white causing my corals to bleach and have not much PE. i really like that i can change the color so easily. hope my corals color up some back to where they were.
