New 30g Cube setup

it happens when air is getting trapped in the impeller housing, usually when the pump is pumping out more water then it can bring in. you can either throttle back the outlet of the pump or increase plumbing to the intake of the pump

Just a simple suggestion..

Stainless/marine grade hose clamps on your barb connections.

Don't ask me how I know, I'll even put them on the suction side now. It really is amazing how much water an Iwaki 70 can push..

Wow. I really like this cube! I am planning on doing the same here hopefully sometime soon!

2 things. In the first couple of pics, I see very little surface water movement. then in the last pic, it looks like there is pleanty of surface movement. true?

also, are you getting lots of water movement within the tank now with the CL?

ok, one more thing. any pics of all of the pluming? (a back side pic)
thats the only thing im a little nervous about.

hey man, been gone awhile but I did get ur PM . . . unfortunately I dont have any pics of the plumbing behind the tank- and its gonna be real hard to do so now;) but if theres one thing I would have changed it would have been to make all the holes 1" . . . the only problem with that is it may compromise the integrity of the glass (reason for the bigger size is cuz of flow problems and im not being able to use my CL to its full extent- Im getting maybe 8-900gph vs. the 1200 the pump is rated for)

as far as turbulence, its not so crazy in there that my sand doesnt stay put, but it does kick a lil. ive got all the returns positioned so that theres quite a bit of surface agitation though

total circulation is estimated around 1200gph total (Gen-X 40 @ 1190gph & Mag 5 @ 500gph)

yeah, i know- ive just been too lazy to get around to putting em on- they've been on the floor next to the tank since it was set up:)
Thanks though!

Thanks for all the kind words :)

heres a lil update

Not much has changed in the way of equipment, about the only thing i added was some sponge in the sump right before the bulkhead outlet to cut down on microbubbles that have been getting into the main display

I added some SPS earlier this week and its all been doin great!
I ordered the 20 frags for $200 shipped @ ReeferMadness . . . the vast majority of the order went into my 72g, but i saved 4 for the 30 . . .
heres some pics:

Looks great! Two questions....does that elbow work well as an overflow, meaning, how is the turnover? And, would you be able to use a SCWD on your CL? I am considering pretty much the same setup as your nano, but I would really like an internal overflow box.

To answer your first Question, yes, the elbow coming from the bulkhead does an awesome job as an overflow- I lucked out in that the height is perfect and with everything running there is no "sucking" sound- theres hardly any sound at all actually.

as for your second question- yes you could use a SCWD on the returns, and in fact looking back I should have, as i have one that im not using, but as I was plumbing her up, there became a bit of a space issue, as most of the plumbing is rigid.
that, coupled with the fact that the SCWD would further decrease flow was the reason I dont have one on it

as far as the internal overflow . . . why? you have very little real estate that can be used as it is, and as far as I can see there are no added benefits- the single elbow I have on there does all the surface skimming that is needed.
just an observation, since I myself tossed that idea around too:)

jcraft, thanx for the heads up, I am still trying to decide between a cube or a corner tank. I am finishing the basement in order to make another living room, so I have time to plan it all out.

Hey Jcraft:

Killer setup dude, I as well will be using the Gen-X PCX-40 for my CL pump. (I have a Mag 7 for my return pump). I will be setting up the PCX-40 as my CL pump with a SQWD and was wondering how the noise level with your setup is? Is is too loud, or just bearable?

What is the filter/screen material you use on your overflow elbow? It looks like some sort of plastic netting. Where did you buy it at?

Thanks,
Chris
