New 40 gallon...

Hey all,

I'm a newbie to the reef thing and was suckered into a 40 gallon breeder from the Aquarium Store. Been wanting to do a reef tank for years and finally bought into it. Didn't realize a 40 is a hard starting tank BUT I will try to deal with it anyway. Since I was so newbie I bought the typical tank package which, come to find out isn't the best set up for an eventual reef tank.

I am still needing to pick up about 40 more lbs of LR but don't want to get it from the Aquarium store because they just kill ya on the $/lb.

Will be looking at doing SPS coral?! in the future and will need to start looking for a good protein skimmer, pump, and lighting. I thought of doing a sump under the tank in the cabinet I'm having made but I hear a HOB skimmer will work just fine. I like the sump/fuge idea much better but that is also more $$$. Lighting will also be a need which I might try and DIY some MH, but we'll see.

So here is the point, anyone have any new or slightly used gear they are wanting to get rid of due to upgrades that would work well for my 40? Just toss me a PM or whatnot, hope to start getting to know some people around here and maybe join the club etc. We'll see how things go though, finances are tough from these dang cancer bills!!!

Geoff!!!!!!!!! Let me be the first to say.........

[welcome]

A 40g isn't really a bad size... Do you already have it set up??? Do you have a sump??? Are you just looking for HOB skimmers??? I'm probably taking a trip to Premium Aquatics... LMK if you want me to pick up some LR... Just shoot me a PM or give me a call!!!!!!!! Glad you found us and LMK if theres anything else we can do to help!!!!!!!!! :D

FWIW I would definately go with a sump. You will be very limited in skimmer choices if you go with a HOB.....basically you will pay more and won't get as much for your $.

Welcome to the forum:D

Chris

I agree...no HOB skimmers!

Randy...are you serious? You are gonna use the trip up to Illinois for the wedding as an excuse to go to Premium Aquatics? hah hah. You are such an addict!

I have to drive through Indianapolis on the way back... So why not?!?!?!?! lol ;) Besides which, after the wedding my no livestock ban is lifted...

Oh, and my horseshoe supply store is like 20 min from the wedding, so I'll bringing back a bunch of shoes/nails/rasps from there as well... :D

Pickup a few horeshoes and you can write the wedding trip off as buisness related Randy! :)

You have found a great bunch of hobbiest Geoff. A sump is just nice to hide all the ugly stuff in like a skimmer :)

Right now I have the 40 set up with the HOB filter that it come swith and the normal hood for lights. I have had it cycling for about 4-5 weeks now with two Blue damsels and 3 hermits. Have about 5 lbs of LR and about 35 lbs of LS. I also am interested in doing a sump but that means a lot of purchases at once or purchase one item but can't use it til I get everything else.

I figured I would get a 10g or 20g if it would fit and create a DIY sump with bubble traps etc. Have a section for skimmer, fuge, & return pump sections.

Still shooting ideas around. LR? HAHA if the wife would allow me the money I would :(

Thanks for the warm welcomes. If you want to see postings of everything it's all up on my website... www.tangboy.com under the gallery section or blog section.

Have a great day everyone!

I write off every trip we take up to IL... lol :D Its great!!!!! This time I'll at least write off the Rental car... Maybe even a few of the dinners while I'm up there... ;)

tangboy~ If it were me, I'd add the sump... Then add as I needed with skimmer and whatever else... I spent two or three hundred dollars on a premade sump and was no where near as happy with it as I am with my DIY tank sumps... So bottom line is, don't buy **** just to have it on your tank and think its working... This hobby is expensive enough without buying useless or inefficient equipment... You don't have to buy it all at once... You can buy it as your money allows... I find a lot of the stuff you can do without, but it sure does make the maintanence less time consuming!!!!!!! lol :D
