New 40G breeder

Good Evening,

I have a new 40g breeder up and running. I have about 56lbs of live rock mostly aquacultured from Tampa. The tank is a hair under a month old. A small clean up crew is in and I transferred a Clarkii clown(I think?) from my 10g. I would like some suggestions for fish.

Lemon Peel
Flame Hawk
Purple Firefish
anthias

[welcome]

lemonpeels are among the most likely dwarf angels to pick and nip at corals from what i read.
hawks are cool, but can do damage to your invert population from what i read and have been told.
firefish are cool but you'll want to make sure the tank is covered from what i read.
anthias are beautiful and nice additions to a reef system but there are only a few that would work in a 40B. the rest utilize more space than we can provide with these tanks (i have a 40b too.)

gobies, blennies, chromis, some smaller wrasses, cardinals, some dwarf angels (all are a risk, some like the lemonpeel more than others, assuming you're going reef), are all considerations you can look more in to.

I have a 40gB and I would drop the idea of anthias. There is just not enough room. What I got and really like is a trio of C.rubriventralis or redfin fairy wrasses. They seem to be doing really well. Also flasher wrasses are really cool.

Thanks,

I appreciate the input. What do you think about these fish together?

Bicolor Pseudochromis
Lawnmower Blenny
Yellow watchman Goby -already have
Clarkii - already have
Flasher Wrasse
Kole Tang - Yellow-Eye Hawaii

no tang is going to work in a 40B long term. a 40B is too short for them to have an adequate amount of room to swim. the rest of that list looks okay though.

Also the clarki are mean fish IME. IF I were to add one I would establish the other fish first as that clown isn't going to like any new fish comin to his hood.

You may have a different experience but I am just putting it out there for you to think on. In a 40Breeder I would do some flasher wrasses but I would make sure to cover the top as they are jumpers.

No tangs in a 40G!

The Clarkii will likely get very mean, but you may get lucky.

The Pseudochromis will also likely be mean, you might consider a Gramma loreto instead, royal gramma, as they are very similar in appearance and have a much better disposition.

As others have said, Centropyge spp. are somewhat likely to nip/damage corals so adding one is a risk if you want corals. Several of mine also damage snails.

The hawkfish will likely pick on shrimp.

If you will cover the tank, flasher wrasses are very cool.

Because of the similar body type, you may see some aggression between a lawnmower blenny and the watchman goby, but I think they would be fine and are good choices. Good luck.

i recently seen one of these wide 18 inch tanks at petco

im thinking about getting it

its a 40 but looks much better and i could do more scaping with my rock ect with it than my 40 long

Thanks for the input,

I always like hearing people's response to the Tang question. I agree that the tank is too small. However, there are many people adding Coral beauties to their tanks and this fish gets pretty big in comparison. How do you think a coral beauty and the Clarkii will get along? I don't want to deal with all the fighting. I might just add one more fish and keep it at 3. Spend more time on corals. My hope is to add a RBTA in a couple months.
