i have a 561 gallon acrylic tank,102x36x30,i need to build a stand 30 inches tall any sugestions for very simple wooden stand to hold the weight (reef) i dont know if reef or fish only matters..............any thing is helpfull thanks///:headwally:

This is a great question. I was also thinking whether to use steel or wood. I can see the advantages of steel, but wood should work fine also. I also think most of the stands built can carry 4x-5x the weight of the aquarium+water. I see commercially built stands and while they scare the heck out of me, I guess that they were probably engineered correctly. We hobbiest might just use brute force in place of good engineering (using the least resource to meet the requirements).

Well, you can figure salt water weighs aproxamately 8.55 pounds per gallon, plus the weight of the tank, rock, equipment (light fixture, plumbing, etc) plus the weight of the water in the sump if it is hidden below the tank. Make sure the floor can also support the weight as well. As far as the stand goes, not sure what each 2x4 or a 4x4 can support in weight, might be some literature out there on the web that can give you some insight into what it takes to support the weight with a wood stand. Obviously steel would be stronger, and might be an option to look into as well.

this standing is holding 15000lbs
