Interesting rock work, I would make sure you have good flow around the left side. The rock looks a little "Tight" and could be a problem. Also with so much near the surface, your coral selection could be an issue with so little grow out room.

Like your arch

thanx,
i have had lots of trouble finding out the proper way to direct the flow of water...I cant find a clear answer, i know there is flow because i can see particles being blown around in the water on the left side, but i dont know how much i want. Suggestions or maybe a link to some good info would be great!

I made it so high cause i was trying to cover the black overflow box, i will try to get a good side shot uploaded, it kinda slopes back (i dont plan on having much coral, although from what i hear those are famous last words)

Recommendation: a sea swirl (I JUST got one, so I'm still struck with the device) which will rotate flow left to right 90 degrees. It has improved things in my tank, where I did have spots that were too still.

Plus, encourage bristleworms---they clean where nothing else can reach, including into holes in the rocks, and their output feeds corals.

this actually the third arrangement,

the first was unstable and when i casualy bumped my hand into one of the rocks to see if it was sturdy, the whole thing collapsed.....

another 20lbs of live rock and arrangement two formed which was kinda a split, two clumps on either side, but i missed my arch...i chose the long piece specifically for it....

so then i decided to rearrange it again! and now i am happy with it. except i had a couple extra pieces so i put those in the back right corner...and there is one chunk up on the top left, right in the far left, top that i am not to fond of.

... aww man. this is why you really cycle your tank for 4-6 weeks, cause your trying ti find the right arrangement for your rocks!!

Now you got me laughing, I think most can really genuinely empathize with that

Looks pretty good, though I agree a little tweaking might help. I had an arrangement that was too 'tight' in my 65g, it was worth it to break the entire thing down and start again so there are more caves and no dead spots. I find it really helpful to have someone sitting nearby to give feedback as I work, sometimes it's really hard to tell if something looks good while you're up to your elbows in water!

Oh great now you tell me the secret.....

water speed

water speed

so if i move a couple rocks to the right side i should be better off? i think i will also direct one of the return tubes toward the left side more....

dont i want some area where water is moving really slow? like for fish to sleep (or do fish like to get knocked around while sleeping) ??

I posted this to another 75g aquascaping thread but it is probably on page 5 by now with as many new posts that RC gets.

Here was my 75g before.

The guy I bought it from thought there was #120 in the tank but I think it was more like 140# since I took out almost 60# and was able to create this

I had help though from a guy who has arranged tons of rock I am sure helping other reefers. I had the idea for two islands and he just made the rock fit. I added the arches on the right island the next day and a few small pieces to fill in but that is the extent of it. I want enough room to grow plenty of coral while keeping the flow up (the 2 mj1200's and the mag7 return are not enough as I can see dead area even on the left side of my tank). The fish enjoy the increased flow as well along the back glass and will literally play in it by swimming to the right side of the tank and drifting into the current so that they shoot from right to left along the back glass, facing the right. It is a game for them.

Obviously I like a more spartan scene but yours is intesting, especially the arch. No matter what you do, keep that element. I agree that it looks slightly unbalanced on the left side of the tank. I think you will eventually ignore the overflow anyway and spreading your rock out may create a less truncated feel. Are you going to keep the tank "see through" and not put in something that blacks out the back glass? Mine came with some black plexiglass which I like since it hides all the cords from lights, PH, etc.

Good luck!

I think it would look great if you moved some rock from the far left side so that there is a peak in the middle of that side of the rockwork.

Eeek I hate commenting on people aquascape because its such a subjective subject. What one person likes another hates. But I'm happy to give my opinion, just remember that's all it is..

I think the left side is to busy. The arch is very cool and ands a good bit of interest to the tank. But by far the worst thing is the left side looks "FLAT". It reminds me of a 2 dimensional cartoon.

With all that I think is wrong here is a suggestion of what to try.

Forget about the overflow and don't try to hide it. Instead highlight it and work around it as though it's a part of your structure. Paint your background black or put a thin black acrylic sheet on the back. You overflow will disappear visually once your corals are in.

Build up some dimension from front to back or left to right. Totally your choice but I enjoy when rock slopes both front to back and side to side. If you have enough room left to right a valley in the center perhaps framed by your arch would look cool.

Last word. If your asking for help you yourself probably don't think it's perfect.. You know something is off or it doesn't match you. Change it, take a pic, Change it again, take a pic.. O' and check out some of the tanks here for great ideas.

Looks like you're off to a good start. One thing I would add would be a blue or black background. What type of lighting are you using?

Thank You so much for the feedback!!! I will be moving some of the rock over to the right side, but ya i want to keep the arch

black background, thats such a simple idea and it will totally make the overflow disappear!

And to answer andrew's question... i am using Coralife Aqualight 4X65's with two 10K and two actinic( i think the actinic light is off in the pic

I'll post some more pics of the new design once i finish...tonight or tommorow..

keep the ideas coming!!!

I thought you were running 6500ks or something. I'm sure with the actinics it would look much better. :)
