Got my first fish and corals today. Also picked up an electric blue hermit crab today.

Can anyone ID the brain coral?

A month ago today, actually. I used 80-85 lbs. all live rock, which I'm assuming made it have little to no cycle. I got the OK 2 weeks ago that I could put fish in from my LFS, but I decided to wait and have been testing my water every 3 days. My params have consistently stayed the same. Calcium was a tad bit low, but I'm working on that.

Ah. I wish I would have had the $$ to start with LR. I had about 100lbs of base and about 5 of LR lol. Its just now starting to grow coraline. Do you have a fuge on it? What are you dosing for calcium?

I haven't started dosing for Calcium yet. I just sent a message to a local reefer to get more info on that. Apparently the Saltwater at the LFS has lower Calcium. They now offer a "Reef Water" which I'm sure has higher Calcium but went ahead and refilled with Salterwater today for a future water change.

Yes, it was EXPENSIVE! :) I bought a used tank that came with a skimmer, sump, pump, w/ fuge, and cabinet and canopy. Just the tank and cabinet at Wet Pet's was $860. I paid $500.

I found a couple light scratches on it here recently which has bummed me out, but hey I got a great deal right? I will live with it. lol

Yah I got my 72 on craigslist. Its scratched in a few places too but I got a killer deal on it. I drip kalkwasser for a week and add liquid calcium and iodine the next week. I also dose strontium, molybdenum, and coral-vite in my top-off water. I have gotten my calcium up to 440 and backed off on dosing. Now I just need to get some corals to use the calcium instead of skimming it out lol.

Also on a side note you should get an RO and make your own water. Its way easier.

That is the plan. (On the RO)

After my initial plunge of $$$, I assured the Mrs. I would wait til this month to do much more. I am hoping to be able to plumb it in where the laundry room is, but not too sure if it's possible yet.

I plumbed mine in a cabinet above my washer. I bought an entire Hague 3500 with pressurized reservoir for 10$ from habitat for humanity store. Lol I don't think they knew what it was. I got new membranes for it on eBay. I have an open top with 2 fans and 530 Watts of halide so evaporation is a problem. . 1.5 gallons per day. It would be very testing to buy that quantity of water from lfs.

Just a note for you both. Definately buy a good rodi unit. The BBC lub gets a discount from air water ice and their 150 gpd extreme is awesome. Lookin good on the tank by the way.

Looking for some help on corals.

I purchased some corals yesterday and the LFS employee recommended I mix AquaVitro Calcification, Ions, and Fuel w/ DT's Live Phytoplankton and blast it directly above the corals 2-3 x's a week.

I have had great experiences with this store so far, but I've read that this ISN'T the proper way. That I should NOT mix the AquaVitro products with the Phytoplankton.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I have never heard of this? Corals take mag and calcium in with the water they take in,not the food ? Also some corals do not like direct feeding and will shut down there polyps and stop feeding. I would NOT suggest doing this, you can spot feed but imo not with these products mixed in with your coral food. Also try reef nutritions phytoplankton it does not have a rotton sulfer smell like dts. Just my 2 pennys.

Yeah bump oddball - dOnt ever blast coral with any type of none food additive ie aquavitro calc and ions - the fuel is a mix of carbs and aa and such jazz - you can burn coral with alk and calc - I know that jazz ,aquav is liquid but still
- find a regular dosing schedule and dilute in tank water before adding chemicals

Thanks for the help. Will change that up. I don't think my Mushrooms have opened back up since I did that. I hope I didn't hurt them.

Most mushrooms do not eat phyto or zooplankton, they usually just get there nutrients from the water or through photosynthesis as most do not have a gut to digest anything..Some species like the elephant ear mushrooms do eat some smaller foods such as mysis, brine and so on. I would be pretty upset at whoever told you to do this if my mushrooms ended up dying from there suggested way of feeding your corals ! Also remember that a good rule of thumb is lps (large polyped stonys) eat zooplankton of larger sized microns like mysis, brine ,rods original food. Sps (small polyped stonys)eat Zooplankton of a tiny micron size like the reef nutrition oyster eggs. Soft corals like toadstools, colt coral, and finger leathers eat phytoplankton, they also eat by filtering the phyto out of the water column and imo do not like being fed directly.

Ultimately, I should have researched it before doing anything and taking someone's advice. I've read it 1,000 times on here, and just figured it was different. LOL

I have a small frag of Zoas, a Red Mushroom (which I just noticed this morning is sprouting a new head), and a piece that I haven't I.D.'d yet, but looks like a Chalice.

Are mushrooms sensitive to light / water movement? They are in a fairly high flow area and midway up in my tank. Wondering if I should try moving them elsewhere in the tank to help.

Thanks for everyone's input. Helps a newb out for sure.

Mushrooms are pretty tuff and can handle a ton of abuse compared to sps. I would but then in mod to low flow and whatever light you want - but remember lower the light the 'bigger' the mushroom will extend open to gather light - if you put it in a high light spot it would have to open up as much to capture its light so it will stay 'smaller' same thing for zoa/paly
