New Aquascaping ... Any suggestions!

I just re-did my rockwork. I had too many "dead spots". I was planning on getting rid of my percula but my older daugther convinced me to keep her. After putting in the two fish (percula and Yellow Tang), we both had a change of heart. I personaly want to flush her down the toilet (Just kidding) for what she's done to my poor tang. She is one mean old B----! I can't even place a finger in the tank without her bitting the hell out of me!

Any Who! ... I did redo my rockwork to get much better water circulation and make it a bit more interesting for my tang ... I love the tang. It's got so much character, eats real well, picks at the rocks all the time and is not shy at all. I can't say the same for my perc. She eats real well when fed, very shy until there is either food in the tank (that includes my hand/fingers), and beats the hell out of my tang. I don't blame her. She has been in that tank for over 6 years now and I just replaced my Scopas tang which had gotten too large for the yellow tang. I usually replace my tangs every 2 years or so (this will be my 3rd tang ... I had a salfin tang before the scopas). They outgrow my tank too quickly ... They do serve their purpose real well while I do have them, keeping the rocks free of algee. I just hate the fact that I end up paying $30-40 for a tiny little fish and trade them into my LFS for $8-10 when they are twice-three times the size with great color, definition and insanely FAT!

Here is the Picture of the tank. I didn't have much time to place the corals where I wanted to. I already had the livestock in a temporary container (16qt flat container ... aprx 6" height) for over 2 hours. I did have a pump and heater in there to avoid stressing out the livestock as much as possible.

Here goes nothing. Let me know if you have any suggestions. I know ... I need a bigger tank.

Sorry about the picture being a bit fuzzy ... took the pic with my iphone4 :)

Darn ... The lights just turned off ... I'll take some side shots tomorrow after work.

Silly me ... I don't know why I didn't take any side shots earlier. I do have a video that goes from one corner to the other .. but it is way too large of a file ... 720p ... taken with the iphone.

If your tangs keep outgrowing the tank, perhaps that's a good reason to upgrade to a larger tank to accommodate them.

Your rock really has the coralline coloring them up. Good luck with your tank.

That tank is too small even for a small tang, get a CUC including emerald crabs to get rid of the bubble algae instead of the tangs.

CUC? What is that? Are emerald crabs 100% reef safe? I have heard some mixed stories at a LFS ... but not a very reliable source I might add.

Thanks,

Arbi

arbimassihians: check out your local Petco for only of their 55 gall tanks for $55.

Just my two cents...as far as aquascaping- add more rock to the new tank...good luck.

I agree ... Now all I need is someone generous to either offer me a larger tank at a very, very reasonable price. I have been looking into upgrading the tank for the last few months but my budget for the tank is a bit too small to work with.

As much as I love coming home and enjoying a part of the ocean for 10-15 minutes when the kids are sleep, like most of you, I do have much larger responsibilities. Sad to say, my hobby comes in dead last ...

That said ... still looking for a tank. I have one spotted out from another forum. It is still a small tank but 3 times the water volume than what I currently have. The tank is 23gallon, sump 15gallon, Lights 150w MH along with 6 CRE LEDs (for dusk and dawn effects). The owner seems like a real down to earth guy. So far, a pleasure to chit chat with. The dimensions of the tank are 24Lx16wx14h ... It is a rimless tank with a built-in overflow. I am currently waiting to hear back from him. If he is willing to work with the budget that I have on hand, I may just have a new tank within two weeks ... Keeping my fingers crossed!

I would have really liked to get a 48x24x12 but it is a bit too expensive (out of my budget). Whatever I run into either don't have a stand, sump or have the return and loop-backs drilled in spots that I would really not care for. I just haven't come across the right tank setup. Also, I figured that if I get the 48x24x12, I would need more lighting, larger Protein skimmer, more pumps/power heads for flow and so on ... which will add on to the cost. Unless somehow I come across the deal of the century on one, it is quite a stretch :(

Time will tell .....

I just discovered a nice bite mark on my tang ... accomidations of my mean old B----!

I have made up my mind. As much as I would love to keep her around, she's just a PITA. Unless I get a larger tank real quick, this little lady has got to go.

I have to build another trap for catching a fish since my old one was given to a friend to borrow and you know the rest of the story ... whatever's borrowed by a friend usually never makes it's way back home :) No big deal as I have some scrap plexi laying around.

sounds like upgrading might be cheaper (and better for the health of the fish for sure) than selling your tangs every time they outgrow your tank....

I'm not sure about cheaper ... but better for the health of the fish, absolutely. The reason I always like to have a tang in my tanks (use to own a much larger tank ... 110g) is for algae control. I also love their character/swimming around the entire tank. They are great to watch.

If I was in a situation to upgrade the tank, I would do it in a heartbeat ... Believe me! For now, I have to be patient and wait for the right tank. I don't have much of a choice.

By the way, if anyone is having a charitable Monday, I am more than willing to take a 48x24x12 off your hands :) ... I'll even settle for a 48x24x15 ... I'm trying to keep the tank shallow to span the weight across the floor a bit more since the tank is on the second floor ... not trying to be picky!
