New Asfur Angel

I picked this guy up from somebody local a week and a half ago. He went into an established 125g QT with a multicolor angel that came from the same person. I intended to wait a few weeks before beginning preventative treatment on him, but he broke out in white spots/small filmy patches a few days after I got him. He was eating pretty well, so I started to slowly ramp up Cupramine to .35 over a 5 day period. Initially, he continued eating and the spots were going away. In the last 4-5 days though, he has lost his appetite. Today I decided to bring the medication down a little to see if it would help (.3), and when he came out of his PVC I noticed a larger patch near his dorsal area - see pictures. It's impossible to see if you look at him from the side, but straight on or at an angle it's visible. I'm not sure what it is, or if I should continue the copper treatment. Since we've already been at the full dose for a week, I'd like to muscle through to the end now. I plan to run him through two rounds of PraziPro before he's done in QT. I dipped him to check for flukes when I got him and he was clean.

There's a bit of a glare, this QT is in my sump room. I see some scratches on the glass in a couple of pics that look kind of like scrapes, this is at the very top of his dorsal. Easiest to see in pics #3, 5, and 6.
 
Looks like a classic case of flukes to me. Pvc would not scrape a fish like that unless some were sawed and left jagged.

That's what I was afraid of. What would you recommend for treatment at this point? I know Cupramine and PraziPro can be used concurrently, but since he's already not really eating I'm not sure if that's a good way to go. Really don't want to lose him. He already seems more active since I've dropped the copper.

FWIW I've seen no flashing, though he does twitch his dorsal fin occasionally. Eyes look very clear.

The PVC edges are very smooth, I went over all of them with a deburring tool before any were put into the QT. The fish has no scrapes.

If you feel comfortable doing a fresh water ph/temp adjusted bath I'd go that route minnimum of 5 minutes max of ten. Sometimes the eyes will cloud up during the bath, this is typical with flukes... otherwise begin prazi treatment. A fish that size should have adequate fat reserves so not eating for several days won't kill him.

I did a bath on him last week, didn't really see results. I went ahead and started Prazi. Hopefully he starts to improve. He and the multicolor are quite plump, hopefully they have enough to last the treatment period.
 
I agree with your course of action. I also agree that that is a stunning specimen! Careful with cpooer if you go that route. Mine developed pretty bad HLLE during treatment. Noit sure why, I haven't heard that these guys are sensitive to it, but anyways, just thought I'd mention. It's healing.... but SLOWLY :(
 
Thanks SDguy, I read about your Asfur a while back so I've been cautious. He definitely perked up since I started prazi, I'm seeing more flukes on him now though. Maybe the prazi is upsetting them so they are "surfacing?" Might just be that they are more spread out and not all up in one area. I've never dealt with this many flukes before, when should I start to see improvement? I'm a little shocked he came out of his old tank with these things hitchhiking, but that's why we quarantine!

I think I'm going to do another dip on him today to try to provide some relief.
 
Well unfortunately the dip didn't do much :( I ran it for the full 10 minutes and didn't see flukes leaving the fish, nor did I see much in the bath water when I inspected it afterwards (in a clear bowl on a black countertop with a flashlight...)
 
Awesome sooo... Now what? I'm back to having an undiagnosed sick fish that isn't reacting well to broad spectrum treatment, and that hasn't eaten for a week.

Possible secondary infection?
 
The not eating part concerns me. Once this round of prazi is done, try keeping it without any meds, and see if you can get it eating. It certainly doesn't like like it has anything that would kill it quickly, so maybe wait on any more meds until it is eating.
 
That was kind of my tentative plan. He's looking better today, and is chasing food down but not actually eating it. At least he's showing interest...
 
Doesn't copper not mix well with Angels? I have seen some with directions not to use on angels. I think it suppresses their appetite.

Not true. I've treated many angels. Even dwarf angels with Cupramine at .3mg/ls. .3 will kill off ich. All the fish always ate like pigs too..


Nice streamers on that Asfur Rea..
