i wish i new why they died, several people went threw what i did. fish stopped eating, rapid breathing, death within 48 hrs. this happened to our clubs group order and i have read multiple posts in several forums complaining of similar symptoms. call it knee jerk or whatever u want. a bunch of fish died. if i were going to do it all over again i might consider using formalin during qt.
Where did your club get a group order from?!? Sounds like you got a bunch of WC specimens?

If they were indeed WC, PM me and I will give you a link to a breeder whos been doing it for years and years, and has more healthy fat little diurnal feeding babies than you could ever imagine! They would be happy to do a group order for your club too! :D

FYI: Banggai's are classified as an Endangered Species. Avoid wild caught and stick with captive bred.

Dude, Block head-the same situation happened with me. I don't think I mentioned this, but I tried out four banggai's to get a pair out of them, and they stopped eating, rapid breating and death!?!?! It broke my heart especially since I spent like $80 on all of them and that they were my favorite fish.
I was like, completely depressed for a day, and it was just now that i want to try again and breed these, its like, my main goal in having a reef tank. lol.
I think I see that same situation happen also at the LFS i bought them from. When they were just shipped in, they had a bucket of banggais acclimating in, and only 2 out of like 10 were alive >:( :(

Anyway, IT's doing good. I've been feeding IT mysid until it won't eat it anymore. But IT tends to lose some interest in eating after the first 3 mysid but will still eat.
Anything I could do to make the food better for the banggai? I heard some people soak their mysid in vitamins before feeding it. Any suggestions?
And from those pictures, does it look like a healthy banggai?

I'd vote female as well judging by the jaw.

That jaw looks identical to the male I had when I was breeding them. His jaw expanded later on, but only after 6 or 7 batches.

As Wolverine said, the jaw is identical between sexes, as is the fin length (not that it'd matter as they break anyways).

As I said earlier, you'd need a high res photo of the anal area of the fish, as there are slight differences there between sexes. All other methods are purely guessing.

what??!! Meds for what? Why are they dying? Lets not start a rancid rumor here. I'd love to hear some detailed info, but specific meds treat specific ailments, and a claim of "dying fish needing meds" seems absurdly knee jerk to me.

Bangaii are actually quite hard to keep and prone to "heart attack" like conditions. This can be seen when breeding them, scaring the fish or changing something (lighting etc) very suddenly can cause the fish to feint or have a heart attack.

Even as adults they are prone to sudden death for no apparent reason. A Healthy fish eating the night before will turn up dead for no reason the next morning.

I will search through some scientific publications at work to see if I can find a reference for this.

But as also mentioned previously, buy Tank Bred. As they are an endangered species, and you do risk fights to the death when trying to pair them.

Edit: The only way i can sex my breeding pair is by the fin length of my male, his front fin was broken when he was smaller and hasn't completely grown back. Apart from that I have no way of knowing. If it does grow back, I won't be able to tell them apart.

After losing the mated pair I had for over a year, I bought countless groups of 4-6 fix to try and get another pair. Generally most died soon after getting in the tank and never ate. Most had white stringy fecal matter which from previous freshwater fish experience, it usually indicated an internal infections (tropheus and discus). I never treated for such because death was swift once I noticed it.

The last group I got was from Liveaquaria and a pair formed and spawned but unfortunately the male died two weeks after he was holding. I think once paired, neither will pair with another fish.

I've had 2 for about 6 months. i think they guy i got them from was pretty good at sexing them because they swim next to each other all the time and never "face off" like opposite sexes do.

Yeah, that was the way I had planned to buy them, a pair I saw in the tank together, but they're always too young (less than like 2 inches) for some reason. Only one of my stores gets the big ones from where I got it from-3 inches.
