new camera advice

i want to get a new camera but i can't really shell out the dough for a digital SLR and a good lens even though that would be ideal.

Does anyone have a recomendation on a good point and shoot camera with a good macro function.

There are several out there that people seem to be happy with. Take a look at the various options on www.dpreview.com. Virtually all the major manufacturers make good cameras- lots of them with very decent macro performance.
I hear a lot about the Panasonic DMC-FZ5, Canon S2IS, Sony DSC-H1. The Nikon S4 looks very nice specs-wise but I haven't heard from anyone that owns it yet. Man there are tons of cameras out there- it's a great idea to go to a camera store and play with various models to see what you like.

I've had the Canon S2 IS for a week and LOVE IT. Great camera.
