a couple pictures with a new macro lens. still auto settings. where should i start with custom settings?

cmm1970 i took your advice and stuck with a nikon lens. i watched a couple lenses on ebay but could not bring myself to a purchase. assuming the lens would need an overhaul. the average age and possible hours on an older nikon. ahhhh who am i kidding i went in to pick up a remote and walked out with the vr lens.

I am jealous of your VR 105. I have the old school lens and shooting underwater, the VR would be helpful.

With your new 105, you will find that your macro shots will scream with depth of field if you can massage the shutter speed and ASA/ISO to allow for shooting around f22. You won't believe what you can resolve when you work in that lense's sweet spot.

Good luck!

thanks ill post some pictures soon. ive made my way through the settings taking pictures in different ranges to compare. seems i must develope an eye for things. if my corals dont bleach from the flash first haha.

these are the better pictures i came up with. i experimented with the aperture set at f/22. please tell me what you think.

Now you are looking like a photographer! Your DOF is much better than the last set you posted. The right lens for the job!

In the top photo, you were a fuzz out of focus on the whole, but the other three look good. Second photo, probably 1/3-1/2 stop over exposed as demonstrated by the blown out white areas.

A good guidle line is shoot digital 1/3-1/2 under exposed in a RAW/NEF file format with the camera and then you can tweak the shadows, color balance, and exposure in your editing software. If you shoot jpeg files, you will not have the +/- 2 stop flexibility that the NEF file will give you. Always shoot RAW/NEF.

thanks for the compliment cmm1970 i was able to spend a good deal of time with the camera. its kinda nice reading your advice and knowing exactly what your talking about. proves my reading is paying off.
