Here are my first attempts with the new lense. Any comments are welcome as I am still learning. I used the Canon zoom browser for them since I do not have photo shop. I will be posting several today. Camera is Canon XTi.

Congrats on the new purchase, when I looked at the first few photos I was going to suggest you be mindful of the DoF and subject movement. However, as I scrolled down, I can see you are getting a grip on that rapidly. Therefore, all I have to say is:
Welcome to the macro world!

Louis beat me too it. The first thing I fugured out about my 100mm f/ 2.8 was the incredibly shallow DoF it had at lower F stops.

Sweet lens. Have fun

Stop reading my mind! :)

By the way, great pics!

Thanks. I would like to figure out how to get rid of the really small particles in photos, such as the foxface shot.

Wow your a fast learner ! Great work so far .

The white stuf looks like reef snow, I think ? If it is try shutting your circulation pumps down for the photo shoot . That also helps for coral macro also .

I hope that helps you ,

Nice shots! Hey, I have a colony of those green and red striped protopalythoa, too. Try feeding them mysis. They eat the things whole (and it's kind of scary).

One comment about your coral shots. Try to get the polyp mouth in focus. Even if the fringes of the polyp are out of focus, a lot can be forgiven if the mouth is clear. It kind of draws the eye, like getting the fish eyes in focus.

Good luck with it! It's my favorite lens.

After shutting off all the pumps and letting things settle, the rest of the reef snow is really easy to get rid of in post processing. You can use Digital photo pro that comes with your camera, using the stamp tool or photoshop. It does take time however. No quick fixes.

Thanks Joelfish, Umm,fish?, and MCary. I agree that it is "reefsnow" from what i have read in other threads. Any pointers on the stamp tool? I have never used that either.
I seem to have a hard time trying to get the camera to focus on the center. I aim it, push the button down half way to auto focus, and then when I push it again it refocuses out of foucs some. Any pointers on that? Shoot in manual right? I hate to buy an autofocus camera and lense and not use it.

A couple of options, use auto-focus to get close and then switch to manual. Use auto-focus to get close and then change the focus (only works sometimes as auto-focus gets obstinate). Use auto-focus to get close and then physically move the camera back-and-forth until what you want is in focus.

It ends up being easier to use manual focus.

I look at it this way: I may not be using auto-focus, but I still get all the metering info and whatnot from the lens.

Good luck!

Do you have the manual for the xt ? there's a button to push and a dial to spin so you can select which focus dot to use . it's been a while since using the XT so my faulty memory is shot.:)
