i was adding a new lighting system(2x400 mh) and came up with the idea to build this to help keep the heat down

there is a layer of glass between the two sections, which is high enough to stay pretty clean, and deflects heat.
i can just pull the chains up when i need to get in the tank.
works pretty well thus far.

Unfortunately if it's between the light and the water it will also deflect light (PAR). It may not look like it now but in a few months as the bulbs age the difference will probably be noticeable.

My light is of the pool table light shape as well. I still went with an open top b/c of the PITA twice daily task of cleaning off the salt creep. Plus the evaporation helps cool the tank. I wish you luck with your design. Let me know how it works out for you.

ok ,no glass. anyway the temp without glass is holding right at
80 degs. not bad for 800 watts beating down on it!
