I have a new clam and some clam questions.

Here's the clam:

Here's the questions:

I read some where about needing to do something "special" when feeding small clams?

Can you identify the species? I beleive it's a Crocea.

It is only about 2 inches across.

I live in a tropical area and collect my own water if that makes a difference.

it is a Crocea.

if you can get live phytoplankton then i would just add a small amount to the tank every day and that will feed the clam. if you cant get that then i would do a 1% or 2% water change everyday with the Natural sea water you collect

I have clams that size and I never feed them. These guys are phosynthetic and can thrive under strong lighting. You can use DT's as a supplement, but I wouldn't add alot to your tank because your clam probably won't benefit from it unless you bowl feed it.

Good luck.

until clams are about 3" in length there mantles arnt large enough to support them fully on photosynthesis alone.
clams also feed slowly all day long, if you try to feed them too much too fast they will reject it.

I have around 12 clams, half 3" less and have had no problems not feeding them. They may be obtaining food from the water column, but i have no direct feeding.

Everyone has their own way of doing things.

I think small Maximas are more demanding of feedings, though I have a Maxima which was 2 inches when I bought it. Without feeding, it is now almost 3.5 inches and looking great.
