i haven't seen one with a mantle pattern like that, if you have time could you please post some more pics, especially one from above.

That is lookin sweet. What color is the mantle? It's a little hard to tell.

thanks the lfs told me that it was a mix. The shell has all of the scutes like a maxima. The mantle is whitish gold. ill try to take a better pic.

crocea clams do grow scutes, it's just that they break off as the clam bores into rock in the wild. tank raised ( or croceas that have been in a tank for a long time ) will grow and keep their scutes.

It isn't a hybrid, hybridization isn't possible. If it was then the clams would have done so thousands of years ago in the wild.

if you read James Fatheree 's book though you will find that there is no real scientific evidence of hybridization and from his discussions with Daniel Knop, they have come to the conclusion that the hybrid title is usually given when the person identifying the clam is stumped.


the truth is that not all of one species always look the exact same,you can see this in humans as well as animals. as Maximus Clammus said above, we would expect to see a lot more hybrids after millions of years of evolution and possible cross breeding in the ocean, if hybridization were truly possible.

I have just been forwarded an email that has been going on about these so called hybrid clams. It was from one of the most knowledgeable clam experts in the world today. So far all that has been accomplished is that there is a farm claiming they have successfully hybrid clams. They are not showing any proof.

So until I see DNA proof there is no such thing as a hybrid clam.

Although it would be very cool.
