Hello, I'm new here, and I've been looking around a while and decided to join today in hopes of getting some info. I'm going to explain my situation, trying not to spare details (so it may be pretty long), and hopefully some of you guys can help me out.
Ok so starting off I have a 10 gallon tank, I've had it for a 1 1/2 years. I've had a false percula clown in it for a little over 1 year and for a couple months it has been the only fish in the tank. It almost always just stayed on the right side of the tank up against the glass. I've never had more than one clown in the tank at a time, so I decided to get another one in hopes of making it happier and more lively. A week ago I brought my new false percula home and introduced it into the tank. To my surprise it was not scared at all and was immediately comfortable in the tank, just slowly swam around checking out its new home. Then the two clownfish met, the new one still seemed normal, but my other one (just slightly bigger) was following it around and would swim sideways and start doing this twitching thing next to it. At first I thought there might be something wrong with it since I've never had two clownfish, but then I thought there wouldn't really be any reason why it would suddenly be dying. I thought maybe it's some type of flattery or territorial display, which brings me to my first concern: what is this twitching and what does it usually mean? So, for the first couple days they were actually getting along very well, my old one much more active and swimming all around the tank. Now after a week or so they are still usually fine together, but from time to time I see my older clown quickly swim to the new one and act like it's pushing it away or down from the surface. I've never seen it actually attack the new fish or the new one seem hurt, but sometimes when the old one does this the new one won't back down and sometimes will do that same twitching move the old one did the first day. So my second concern: is my new fish in danger? or is this normal and not a sign of hostility? is this or are there signs that they like/do not like each other? And my last concerns are about pairing. My old clown has been there a year, but I've not had any other clowns till now, would it have already determined its sex? And I've heard that the new one will change its sex to meet the needs of the old one, how much time does it take to decide their sex upon meeting? Also, what are some signs that they are going to pair/have paired?
In conclusion, I've had my tank a while, but I don't know much about having multiple clownfish. I'd appreciate it if you guys could answer my questions and provide any other additional information that could help. Thank you!
