New coral placement question

I just picked up a birds of paradise frag from the LFS. I'm new to SPS's.

I was wondering if I should start it at the bottom (sand bed) or up a few inchs.

I have a T5 light (54 watt) with 2 ATI blue+, 1 ATI aquablue special 1 Giesemann aquablue + bulbs. The LFS had it under HQI 250w about 2' down.

Thanks

SPS need time to adjust to different lighting when first introduced into a new tank, changing from being under MH to being under T5 lighting is an easier change though than the reverse.

I would suggest finding a place in your tank that you feel has adequate flow and high light visibility for the coral and start there, you can always move it a little bit higher up in the tank as need be. I would start in the middle level of your tank and adjust from there.

If you see signs of bleaching chances are the coral is getting too much light and you need to move it lower in the tank although under your T5's I do not see this being an issue.

You will be fine putting it in the middle to start you may even be able to get away with putting it wherever you want.

Thanks for the advice. I knew they liked high light, but didnt know if they was like other corals that needed to be started lower in the tank.

I always put my new frags on the sand bed....I then let them sit for a week and then start to move up to final destination. Usually within 3 weeks corals are in place and I put the epoxy in place to hold them.

It's more of an issue when they come out of a t5 setup and they're going into halides. i got a setosa frag off of someone that came out of a 96w pc tank and i have 2x250 mh. i had to hide them behind some rocks to start them then every week i inched them over on the sandbed into more light until i felt comfortable moving them up onto the rockwork. just my two cents.
