New Crocea

I just purchased a Crocea this weekend from the LFS I paid $50 for a 5 1/2 inch clam. I thought that was a good deal. Great colors I will post pics soon. I have it placed 1 inch into the sand in the front of my 75 gallon tank. It turned it self sidways so I am assuming thats how it wants to be. I was wondering two thinigs. First should croceas be placed ontop of a rock or is the sand bed ok and second how often should I feed it. Any other suggestions on how best to care for this type of clam would be greatly appreciated. I have read allot but experience is still the best teacher.

Thx

i have a clam/stony tank with 2 croceas 1maxima,1 hippopus, 1 derasa. it is important for the crocea to attach to something. i use flat shells if i set a clam on the bottom. croceas and maximas need to attach. i have one crocea on the bottom of my tank and one halfway in the middle. they will turn to where they want to be. if they are jumping around actually moving then you may have a water quality issue. sounds like yous just like the water movement going a certian way. good lighting, and a calcium reactor will really benifit you. also no matter what you here do feed your clam about 1 time a week. alot of people say their zooant.,, alge is all they need but if that was true then why do they have all the digestive parts they have. hope i have been some help. let me know if i can help in the future.

Thanks for the great advice! I am actually making a flat piece of live rock to place under the clam. I have it in a 75 gal aga with 2 175 watt MH and 110watt true 03, I hope that is enough for now. I just bought 2 icecap 250 watt ballasts but need to save up for new bulbs. My tank is full of softies which are growing and healthy. The clam is not in a high water flow area...how much flow should be directed at the clam? How much should the mantel move? if that makes sense. I feed the whole tank photoplank 2 times a week. I can just direct one of these right at the clam.

the 250 watt bulbs will be great for your clams. i use the iwasaki 65 k bulbs, and vho atinics. the 65 k bulbs may not have the best looking color to them, but its what is best for the animal. i changed from the ushio 10 k bulb 175 watt up to the iwasaki 250 watt, and wow what a difference in growth in my clams, and sps corals.

also i forgot. i dont have my clams in a very stong current parts of my tank. i do use a red sea wavemaker, so the effect is never constant or to hard. i would say the mantle should sway a liitle but not so much as to prevent good extension.
