new derasa clam

I just bought my first clam a 2.5inch derasa. I know that these clams are less light needy than maximas and croceas. What I need to know is how often should I feed this little guy? Thanks

you just opened up a can of worms!

Many people say that you don't need to feed a clam at all. Others say the smaller clams need to be fed and larger ones don't. Some people just add phyto and some people spot feed their clams.

I just add a few ml. of phytoplanktion to my tank a 2 times week. So far my clams are doing great!

If you have a good light the clam will be fine.

Thanks for the reply b pierce. I have 440watts of vho lights would that be enough to put my clam on the sand bed? From the sand bed to my lights is about 21inches.

yea but clams hate the rock...how big is your tank?...i would try to keep it in the sand but 21 in is really high...440w should be fine...

Sk8erninja 79, I woudn't say that clams hate the rock. Some clams are found naturally attached to rocks and some ever prefer it.

IMO I would not want to put a clam 21in below the lights especially if it is VHO lighting. jq1177, I would move it up. You will definatly get better color and have a happier clam if it's closer to the light.

Thanks - I really like my avatar too. The Mimic octopus seems to be so intelligent.

No - I do not have a Mimic octopus. I do not think they should be kept in captivity.

codybug I agree. I have heard that they will not mimic in captivity, which I believe is because they are not stiumlated enough.

jq1177 how is your clam? because i just ordered it and i'm supposed to get the same kind of friday

where should i place it in regards to lighting? I have 150HQI ang the tank is 19in!

thanks

Derasa clams are probably the least light-demanding of all the giant clams. I keep mine on the sand in a 75g with 240 watts of NO flourescent lighting. It's done very well for over a year now.
FWIW,

I got the clam in on tuesday and it seems to be doing fine so far. I have it on the sand bed right now in my 120. Its probably about 22" from the lights.

I have a 3" derasa on the sand bed of my 125G approximately 28" directly beneath the center 150W HQI of my aqualight pro. It's been very happy since I put it there three weeks ago and has excellent coloration. The derasa is probably the only clam you can do that with. Pay attention to your clam, it'll let you know if the location is acceptable.
