New Dry Rock

Have you guys seen the last in whats available in dry rock? Marco and Bulk Reef Supply both used to sell rock that looked identical to Fiji Pukani but it sounds like they were having a very difficult time getting it shipped regularly (if at all). So, they both are now offering rock which is supposed to be completely dry harvested and calcium carbonate. I believe it is mined in the US but I cannot say that for certain.

I won't know if I need more rock until I start placing what I have already in my tank. If I find I do need more, this will be it!

Thanks, I will keep that in mind. Hopefully it will be a matter of days until I get rock in the 120G. However, I still might be 4 weeks or so away from putting the 30G online.

Many people think dry rock = base rock. I for one disagree. Dry rock doesn't have any life while base rock is usually very dense with mundane shapes.

This is dry rock I have purchased. I expect my tank to look stark white for awhile but I hope it colors up soon. By going this direction not only did I save a lot of money but also protected myself from a lot of unwanted hitchhikers.

WOW, how much was that Tonga base/lb? That is some nice stuff! Especially that piece on the bottom right hand of the table. LMK if you don't need any of it :)

That came from Marcorocks.com but is no longer available. BulkReefSupply has the exact same product but it too is gone with little chance it will be available again in the foreseeable future.

Another photo of the same rock. This stuff is so porous you get a big pile from 25lbs.

While it is still a very new product, if I needed more it would surely try the rock I have linked at the top. Both vendors are good.

Macrorocks has a flat rate shipping right now of $10. I emailed the guy and he said he would try to get me whatever I needed. I think I might order a 50lb box and see.

Hey carb....nice looking rock! As you already know tonga branch is my favorite. I purchase some of the tonga base and branch the day before the ban was to go in effect. Thanks for bringing it to my attention or I would have missed out on the tonga rock. You need to visit and I'll send you home with a couple pieces they are still in a brut. Well cooked or well done! I am still throwing my tank together very slowly.

I might take you up on the Tonga offer. :)

It appears it is gone for the time, the rumors were true in this case. Glad you were able to get it while you could. The only Branch I see for sale is coming out of people tanks.

That rock is mined in Florida and pressure washed to removed the sediments. That's all I know about that rock.

I was a land developer is FL for 13 yrs and I can tell you that FL was also the largest phosphate mining state back when it used to be used in detergents and things.

Coquina Stone and phosphate is all I've ever heard of being mined in that state.

That's nice looking rock but I'd have to see an independent PO test before ordering alot.

Come on now. I'm so happy - I'm going to show my rock off! LOL
It is the "Signature" Marco rock - same as carb. This rock is not what is being sold by "Marco" at this time.

I've got 50 lbs of this size.

Here's a special 50 lbs that Marc put together for me because I waited over 3 months for my order to arrive.

This one is 26 lbs special order before the supply was gone.

I think I've got around 15 lbs of the same "Signature" Marco that is 3/4" to 3" frag stock. I try to give a handfull to everyone that stops by and wants it.

Nice rocks err that doesn't sound quite right.

So both places are selling land mined FL rock now? You're absolutely right about it being loaded with phosphate. I'd avoid it or cook it really really really well before trying to use it. Then I'd cook it again.

I'll have to look and see what I've got in the way of branching tonga downstairs. Guess I'm in the minority but I don't like it much or at least can't aquascape with it.
Hate to admit it but I'm using the 2-3 really large pieces I have as "base rock" to hold the rest of the rock work off the bottom. :eek1:

I don't know about phosphates, but the Marco I have pictured above had a wicked ammonia spike just 12 hours after soaking in water. The stuff was so cavernous that it took some time for it to cure.

Marco and BRS sell many different types of rock, this kind was only one of them. Marco has replaced this rock with a type of Fuji that was taken live and put on a slow boat over here and he sells it as "Marco rock". It looks nice but what a few people picked up through the years was the "Signature" Marco Rock. Marc realizes they are different and is trying to differentiate the two by naming them slightly different. I don't think you will find the "signature" listed on his site any longer.
I didn't say that FL rock was full of phosphates, I just said that phosphate and Coquina stone were both mined in FL. I'm not sure about the rock strata/placement of sediments that formed FL. That stuff looks real nice and I just don't want to talk bad about someone's product before I'd know for sure. All I meant was that it would be worth a good test.
My rock is not for sale at this time because I'm still dreaming about another build for my son. I ordered this rock back when I still believed in job security.

I am actually gonna order a box of the 50lb rock he has in just a little bit. I think it looks nice and I cant seem to find any rock around here that I like that is big enough for the base I want to build. At $119 plus $10 shipping I dont think it is that bad.
