New ER RS-100 mod questions

So I've read a couple of places that you cant gate valve mod the new RS series?? Any truth to this as I would like to add this mod to my skimmer...

...Also can someone tell me what level of water this skimmer should be in?? I have also read conflicting opinions on this...

Shallow= More reaction time?
Deep= Less reaction time?
