New ETRC rules/officers

Yeah, I'm all for letting the current officers stand untill we have a larger membership, or decide a different course of action... And I also agree with Chris in that we shouldn't dwell on this too long...

I too am sorry that we had to resort to becoming a social club but the present membership left us no alternative. IMO We seem to have a core group of loyal members that have done their part and served as BOD members some have served since the founding of the club so it isn’t fair for them to have to repeatedly serve when there are others that won’t step up. If at a later date the club wants to become formal again all it will take is a majority vote of the membership to reinstate the BOD. So don't delete the constitution and bylaws just yet, we may still need them in the future.

Good lord...I go away for a day and I come back to all this turmoil.

I don't want to make is a Melocrasy...you all know that. But officers at this point have basically been in name only. I will be fine with keeping things the way they are, if you guys want to (keeping the bylaws I mean). That's totally fine with me. I'm not making this decision though.

Does anybody have a Word copy of the Constitution and Bylaws? I'd like to take a swing at modifying them to suit the present mood, but the website and website record only has a PDF version.

Wow. I hadn't seen this one. I hope this all works out for you guys (I know it will). I have to say (staying mostly out of the discussion on purpose;)) that the LFS' and frag swaps were largely responsible for a large number of our new signee's. LFS (like Chris said, esp. the Critter because they seem to have a larger audience, though EBay usually has a pretty good sized turn out, too, just not quite as large) meetings were always the largest, though we did pull some nice sized ones from time to time (sometimes unexpectedly). I can say that the first frag swap brought in some great members that the club might have missed out on (as well as the second, but many of those who came in on the first were the biggest help on the second). That portion of people are some of the most active in the club now. The club really started to get active when I announced I was leaving and wouldn't be running for pres. That was when everyone stepped up and it seems to be rolling now. Jack is spending alot more time with it than I was on the administrative side (or course, I was never actually elected pres, so I felt like it wasn't my place for some things...) and it is headed in a new direction, without too much extra effort (I can't quantify what a lot more means, but he has four kids to give you an idea of how much avaiable time he has). Mainly a lot more background support. It had gotten stagnant or something under my reign(:D), but when the right people came in (even though it wasn't a significant number compared to the existing body of the club-2 or 3 can make a huge difference) and an opportunity for change came about, it took on a new life. The new BOD seems to have more involvement from a more general group of people, which only sparks more interest from others (it can be exponentially infectious, it seems). I guess the moral of that rambling was that sometimes it will just click and all come together. How manay made it through all of those inserted parentheses'd thoughs:D?

I did alot when I was in (or the, I guess) BOD for MTRC, so I know how you guys (and Mel;)) are feeling. Maybe this will be the spark the club needs to get everyone moving. No one can contest the availability of knowledge, comraderie, and assistance on this site and in your club (I just got hooked up by a number of you-that is exactly the type of thing I am talking about). For those who are afraid it will take up a lot of your time, so you're afraid to get involved-it really won't. If 25% of the club members start to pitch in 20 minutes of their week, more will get done than needs to be done;). You guys have got some great members, new and old. A few can pull it along and keep it alive, but it takes roots and foundation to make it thrive...

Well there you have it:lol:

We've got the roots and the foundation, I believe.

There's a core group of people who actually care a lot about the club...which is the most important thing. Those people want it to keep growing and continue. We're all willing to volunteer and keep things moving forward. I don't necessarily think we need officers to do that...but if everyone else does...I won't make any objections at all.

Yeah. Wasn't sure what to think about that at the time:D.

To continue on my metaphorics-there is no doubt that the tap root is there holding the club strong, it was the branching root system I was talking about (i.e., more of the club). The more people that start putting in time, the more the club will stabilize (a call to other members;)).

I say you did good! I am not a member, but I respect the decisions you have made as a group. I think many clubs are not fun anymore because of all the "political junk." I commend you for bringing the club to the same place you started your own reef tanks in the first place....a place of fun.

GO ETRC!!! errrr........ETRSC...social club....:D

The club really started to get more active when you left because there were a few of us afraid what of what would happen with out our fierce leader. To make a long story short, the club had been in a state of holding Gary's hand for some time. Anytime something needed done, everyone would just think Gary was going to take care of it. We (the new BOD) now hope that we have gotten enough new members involved administratively that the club can not rely on one person doing all the work.

Geez...gone for a year and things devolve into anarchy!

But officers at this point have basically been in name only.

I think/hope I'm reading this correctly Mel, but if that's the case, what's the big deal? If there's really not a lot expected of the BOD, then I can't see being on it as much of an issue or drain. Maybe i'm wrong though and misunderstood?

I guess I can see it from both sides here. The FVRC here isn't an official group, just a socail group, and things tend to go pretty well. We've had meetings with upwards of 40 people show up...heck, when I hosted in may I think we neared 30 people. i was surprised, to say the least. I figured half of that.

I think both ways can work...and to be honest, with the core group of members you've got, I can't see it going by the wayside, which maybe is Dave's concern? I know the SMAS I started with a few people down there for general fishkeeping in the area is now defunct...less than a year after I started it and passed the reins to a new group to run it. Never really went anywhere from there.
