NEW Euro-Reef - Broken in 20 minutes!

I think it is appropriate for dhnguyen to comment on the shaft design given his vast knowledge of DIY pump mods. I did not see him trashing ER, just critizing the choice of a pump with a fragile ceramic shaft. Whether he owns the skimmer or not should not change the fact that he has a lot of hands on experience with pumps and shafts.

Heh.. that last sentence sounded funny.

Most of us have owned ER's, I have one running now. Setting up new tank with a Deltec, will sell or throw the ER in closet also when I get stuff moved over.

ARG so I guess I am one of the people that bought one of the euroreefs due to the recent "upgrades" and I am considering sending it back once I get it now. If these new impellers are fragile I dont want to use it. I put my equipment through hell and to be honest, if I pay almost 500 dollars for a EuroReef I expect it to withstand whatever I subject it to. The skimmer coming to me is a brand new RS180. Obviously it uses the sp4 (genx) pump and I hope this isnt an issue with these pumps, as well. What do you all think, should I be concerned? I toyed around with buying a deltec, tunze, or h&s but when it came down to it the EuroReef seemed like the best bang for the buck. Hope I am not wrong.

OR you can ask ER to send you a spare ceramic shaft just in case? :)

Honestly this would be a very fix if the only problem with the pump is the shaft as I stated before.

I dont think people should get into a panic about it. If you have a concern, I'd give them a call and see what they say. FWIW, my RS250 with the upgraded impeller is working just fine (Gen-X SP5).

Conceyted,
That is the impeller/pump (Gen-x 4100) that failed on my RC 180. I had it less than 30 days. Take the pump apart, look at the impeller, if its white then I believe its the old style. I think the upgrade is black.

Your old style impeller failed? I thought when I had read through that you were saying the new style impeller had failed.

I removed the broken white impeller in 3 pieces.

The black rubber end-caps that hold the impeller in the shaft easily slid out.

I wonder the pump had a white impeller shaft - this RS135 was shipped directly from Euro-Reef last week.

I'm looking forward to the new one - different material - black?

If you keep bugging them and they remember to send it. Maybe you got another "Beta" Just remember with "Euro-Reef, Customer Service" is "Number ONE"

It was a new unit purchased Sept 29, installed Oct 10. When my RC 180 w/Genx 4100 failed it also carved and grooved the inside cylinder of the pump. Tonight I called Euro Reef (try 949-770-9913) and bought the upgraded Eheim pump. Yes, I gave them more money. Now maybe they can hire more help in customer service and research and develpment.

Pitstop - Be sure the inside walls of your pump are smooth. It may be fine though, yours failed instantly.

Mike if you bought the skimmer back in september the new impellers were not even out yet. They didnt release the new impellers untill early October.

Hopefully, you just paid the difference between the 2 pumps, since it is only 2 months old. Now, really good customer service is if they replaced your defective unit with the new upgraded Eheim when you exchange yours.

$150 + shipping. Ouch. I hope its put on the back of the fast mule. Georgia is a long way. I'll let you know when it arrives and any performance issues I have.

Thanks all for the help and guidance - only wish it could have happened to someone else. Oh, it did.

dhnguyen- Where did you get your carbon drive shaft? Is it carbon fiber or carbon? How much did it cost? It would seem these would be a good investment.

How do you cut the carbon fiber rods to length?

a dremel or similar tool. A hack saw will work as well it'll just take a bit longer.

First, I would like to say that I have posted many, many times in many threads singing the praises of Euro-Reef...go to the "Skimmate of the Day" thread...just look at who started it and look at the very first pic.

My point here is that no one thanks me for all the free adverts, but the moment I have an issue with the equipment I receive negative and unwarrented posts.

At no point did I bash Euro-Reef - ALL of us at RC are interested in the truth about ALL equipment - that's why we spend time here? Am I incorrect?

UPDATE:
Chip at Euro-Reef called me - the same day the skimmer arrived and the same day the skimmer broke and the same day I called him at Euro-Reef - all this happened Wednesday Nov 8.

He said he was sending me out a replacement impeller priority mail - should arrive today - but since my SPS reef is in my science lab and the lab is closed for Veterans Day observance, I will not be able to install and test the new impeller until Monday Nov. 13.

I will take pics of skimmer, pump, awesome new needle wheel impeller, of course the broken impeller, the replacement impeller and the skimmer in operation - and one of the reef of course.
