Here is a new book for every fish lover !
Reef and Shore Fishes of the Hawaiian Islands
Author; Dr. John E. Randall
Publisher; SEA GRANT COLLEGE PROGRAM, University of HawaiÂÂfi, Oahu
Publication Date; March, 2007
Format; Hard Cover, 546pp., Ca.1000 Color Photos
The greatest book on Hawaiian reef fishes was just published. It is the most desirable book that the author wished to write and is worthy of having, reading and just seeing beautiful photographs.
Dr. Jack (John E.) Randall was born in 1924, and left California by an 11-meter long ketch to sail through the Pacific Ocean in 1950 and reached Hawaii where his new life started. He was a long senior ichthyologist in the Bishop Museum in Honolulu and retired several years ago but his interest in marine fishes is everlasting. So many people call him a ÂÂeliving legendÂÂf and many talented ichthyologists have been studied under his direction. He is also a diver and observed fish life modes underwater in many tropical and subtropical areas of the world. He will study fish specimens that were collected by himself. He takes photographs of fishes underwater and also of fresh specimens at his laboratory, and now his photos can be seen in books, papers, magazines, webs and ichthyological works as well everywhere.
He has published 670 papers, describing 20 new genera and 620 new species, and many Indo-Pacific Fishes series as well. He also published excellent books covering marine fishes from major tropical areas; Caribbean Reef Fishes (1968, 1996-revised & enlarged), Underwater Guide to Hawaiian Reef Fishes (1981), Red Sea Reef Fishes (1983), Guide to Hawaiian Reef Fishes (1985), Guide to Fishes of Maldives (1992), Coastal Fishes of Oman (1995), Shore Fishes of Hawaii (1996), Surgeonfishes of HawaiÂÂfi and the World (2001), and the awarded Reef and Shore Fishes of the South Pacific (2005), and also co-authored Fishes of the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea (1990, and 1997-revised as the first author). He contributed to so many other books on sea fishes by various authors and even some publications were dedicated to Jack. His style is not changed but the two recent books have been changed; a large format book with many photographs of living fishes, more detailed and ever accurate narration, no space for every page, and the type locality for each species.
This large book is describing all the known 612 species from the chain of islands, including Midway Atoll and also Johnston Island that can be encountered by divers, and submersibles of depths down to 200 meters, with some 1000 beautiful color photos. He told me that he is preparing two other books on fishes from Easter Island and the Kermadec Islands.
I highly recommend this book even if you do not take interest in Hawaiian fishes and I am sure that you can obtain many knowledge about ÂÂefishesÂÂf and Hawaii, and also find many new fish species that have been left in the field and/ or in the museums. Hurry to your local book store.
