New fish choice.

I am going to be adding a new fish to my tank soon. I have a 55 Gal with not a whole of rock in it right now. My current fish load is in my signature (minus the 5 snails and 10 little crabs). I am looking for suggestions as to my next fish. Something decent size and nice looking would make the Mrs happy. She has vetoed a snowflake eel and I don't want to put a lion in there (not this tank anyway).

I was looking at maybe a smaller trigger but not sure yet. Maybe a butterfly? I don't mind getting a juvenile species and then taking them back to the LFS when they get to big. I have two stores in town that are pretty good about giving credit if you do this.

If all else fails I may just end up with 2 Bangaii Cardinal. Too bad there are no Dwarf Tangs :(

Perhaps a flame angel, hawkfish, bicolor pseudo, dwarf puffer, there's actually a lot to choose from. Depends on what sort of look you are going for.

Any trigger will get too big for a 55G, and even when he is small enough to keep in the tank he will most likely start bullying the other fish. This is where a dwarf puffer that stays under 6" but maintains the cool look/personality would be a better choice.

I agree with xhaust. The minimum for the smallest trigger is a 75 for a undulated and this would have to be the only fish in the tank. Also, tobies (dwarf puffers) would work well in a 55 but could go after your snails/crabs and your corals if you are thinking of going that direction.

What do you want for this tank? Do you expect to put corals in the tank long-term? Any favorite fish or colors of the mrs? Personally, I don't like buying fish with the intention of taking them back as it is easy to get attached, especially if it becomes one of your favorites.

This tank is mostly a colorful living room tank. At some point we would like to put some easier to care for corals in there, it will never be the reef tank (working on breaking her down for a larger tank for that :)). I knew triggers got bigger, but after hearing your thought, the little one I saw is off the list. The Mrs likes Tangs (not gonna happen) and the colorful fish (Bright Blues and Reds).

The only puffers we have seen around here are the dogface kind, which she doesn't like.

I do like the idea of a flame angel. The fish we both want the most is Koran Angel, but from what I have read they like a lot of hiding places, which is still a few months off while I play with my DIY rocks more.
