new fish won't eat.. tried a few things.. and looking for ideas

I ordered some new fish this last week. They showed up friday, as planned. It included two clownfish, a copperband, a cleaner shrimp, and a starfish. The starfish was acclimated over 8hours; and looks good. The cleaner shrimp acclimated for a couple hours and appears to be in great shape. However, the fish have been frustrating. One clown appeared to have a swim bladder issue when i opened the box, and died about a half day later. This was not suprising. The other clown has decent color and appears that it is not starving (ie sunken stomach, poor fins, and thin body) And the Copperband butterfly has great color and appears healthy (no sunken stomach, or thin).

However, neither surviving fish will eat frozen/prepared food. First, the copperband appeared to be actively hunting after a couple hours of releasing him. The fish still appeared to be hunting up until yesterday. Now, the copperband appears to mostly swim back and forth along the glass. I think he has looked most of the stuff over pretty closely.
The clown simply swims around as suspected. Nothing too unusual about him. Doesn't hunt/search for food.
*I do understand what/how butterfly's eat worms, and search them out, or hunt.. yada yada yada... This is my third butterfly, and always had great luck. The copperband is super picky, which does not supprise me too much. but the clown really throws me for a loop.

I have tried frozen brine shrimp, frozen rotifer cubes, frozen prepared fish food (home brew), with and without this soaked in Selcon and thawed. I have also tried generic dry marine fishfood. And I have even tried live blackworms.
The copperband doesn't even look at these items, ever.
The clown will look at everything, but the rotifers, suck it into his mouth and chew a bit; and then spit it back out. (i was going to raise some live brine shrimp, but the local store just sold out to some school class project using the brine shrimp eggs.)

These fish are in a quarantine tank. About a fourth of the 15 to 20 gallons are filled with cheato macro algae. And it has a single power head with a carbon cahnber attatched to it. I also dose DT's at least every two days. The temp is about 72 to 73. I need to do some chem tests. and will see what my params are at. See if they have swung out of the normal params.

I am VERY tempted to throw the copperband and clown into my display tank now; rather than waiting out the quarantine process. They don't appear to have external parasites..... Maybe the other fish will show them how or what to eat! Or, they will feel more like home.. or, it offers more natural food. I know i have alot of small feather dusters for the copperband to eat.

anyway, sorry for the ramblings. any ideas are appreciated!

BTW, this is the first time i have mail ordered fish. I usually buy locally so i can observe the fish eating prior. I am not too sure about the mail order thing because of this. I have mail ordered corals, and never had any real issues.

thanks again.

i would say theres something wrong with the water they are in.

why are you dosing dts in a quarantine tank?

Why is your temp so low? Should be around 77-80 I know everybody has their own idea but most suppliers keep their temps higher like 79-82
Just an idea
Dave
Also dont dose DT's in a QT tank... Will only foul your water!

From the list of food I noticed you didn't mention Mysis. Exspecially with the copperband I've had great success with frozen mysis.

Umm, if this is your thrid butterfly, your luck can't be that good, lol!

I agree that the temp is too low, Brrrr! poor fish are probably too cold to eat. Also, I agree trying mysis, as everyone seems to like it :)

The low temp is going to stress your fish out. It should be at least 76. Try different kinds of food. Pellets, flake, frozen brine, frozen mysis, cyclopeeze, zooplankton etc.

I agree with the low temp. But I also wonder about other params especially Salinity, Ammonia and Nitrite. I am really thinking water params as has been mentioned.

The lower temp will affect their metabolism, but it is not so low that they should stop eating. I would guess there is an ammonia spike from the decaying DT's which is stressing the fish. You can try covering the sides of the tank to decrease visual stress due to new surroundings also.

Make sure to test for ammonia before increasing temp. Increased temp will only exagerate your problems if the tank parameters are not in order.

somebody mentioned stuffing empty snail shells with mysis for a copperband: they like to pick at things.

Copperbands prefer aiptasia as a diet and frequently starve once that species is depleted.

Thanks for the input everyone. Acidlittle, Yes i still have the 29 reef set up. However, i have another 29 that i am using as my quarantine tank (lately about half to two-thirds full of water). I also picked up a 72 that i will be transfering everything into very soon. I was going to wait on the 72, but decided to go for it since i have the hardwares, and now that i bought some fish.

I did start cultures of brine shrimp. I haven't tried mysis yet. And i do like the sounds of the shrimp in the shell trick. I just don't have any mysis right now. I have never tried garlic, and have read mixed reviews on RC. I usually soak most of the foods in selcon. I am also a strong believer that phyto is a great thing to dose; JMO. I haven't seemed to have any issue dosing phyto and rotting phytoplankton/amonia issues.

Last times i had my copperbands I could get them to eat just about any food i threw in the tank. But i always bought them at a lfs, and knew they were already eating.

As for temp, it is probably a bit low. And i will prolly take a few days and get that back up. I guess it is just something i have been over looking. The funny thing is my display tank is always at 78. And i just double checked it.

as for chemical parameters. The tank water has been running at least a month. Nitrogen products are not showing up on my test kits. The pH looks like an 7.8 to 8 (once again a bit on the low side). Alk said it was 180kh. salt is at 1.024
But, i guess i figured it would be ok for quarantine. It is a bunch of macroalgae, a couple fish, a starfish, as well as any pods, micro stars, sponges, or else growing in the macro algae.

On the bright side, i have seen the clown poop twice in the last three days, when i have been around to watch him... so he must be eating something. Just not eating when i am around.

I have missed a lot of observation time the last couple days since i help with grade school wrestling practice at colo nesco three nights per week. And i have it again thurs night... and won't check the threads until afterward.

thanks
andy

I have tried krill and and mysis shimps lately with a little luck. However, i fed about half of my fresh brine shrimp hatch to the tank. The clown and shrimp went nuts for it. I think the copperband ate some of it... although it is iffy.

I am going to keep growing out the other half of the brine shrimp culture to obtain some larger brine.

But i was wondering if there were any LFS that sell live/adult brine shrimp in the area?

Andy,

You should not be able to see your clown poop unless you are that "lucky" to be there at the precise instant it happens. If you are seeing white stringy feces hanging from the clown he has internal parasites and will benefit from treatment.

Thanks for the heads up. It is a white stringy hanger. I will look into treatment. Unless, you have anything good to add on treatment?
