I have a 55 gal. reef aquarium with LPS & SPS corals, a maroon clown and 3 bangaii cardinals with a 2x250 watt metal halide i was thinking about a wrasse or a tang what would you recommend

A sixline wrasse would stand up to the maroon but might bully your banggais.

What about a carpenter wrasse or some type of flasher wrasse? and make SURE you have a secure lid that they cant get out of

A tang is out for q 55gal. The tank isn't large enough.

Maroon clowns are m-e-a-n, so whatever you add will need to stand up to him.

Personally, I love the wrasses, and they are perfect for a 55gal.

They jump, so make sure you have a tight fitting canopy or egg crate covering the tank.

A sixline is probably the way we'll go. So far the Maroon has been great. He has not been agressive at all towards the other fish, even when they venture into what I think is his territory. Hopefully he'll stay this way. Thanks for the opinions - Drew

You may be pleasantly surprised. I had a great maroon female for years. She never bothered anything and was never aggressive. A couple years ago I decided to get another, that one was a terror. :)

Each fish has there own personality. There be certain specie specific tendancies, but each fish is unique.

I was just reading through some of my posts and figured I'd update this one. We did get the six line and he has been great. Everyone gets along fine. The maroon is still a sweety, although she redecorates her space occassionally and if I place something in her area she will remove it. The other day I was removing some algae and a tuft drifted into her area - she grabbed that piece, swam it out and put it in my hand! None of the residents in the tank bother each other and the copperband (only new addition since this previous post) actually feeds the cardinals, or at least thats the way it appears.

Wow that is one of the coolest things I've heard.. maybe you can train the Maroon to play 'fetch'? LOL

I am quarantining a 6-line wrasse right now. I suspect it will do fine with my 2x occelaris and 1x midas blenny.

Do you have any shrimp? If so how does the 6-line behave?

We do also have a peppermint in there. No problems whatsoever. The six-line has never picked on anyone or anything in the tank. Everyone gets along perfectly. The copperband frequently shares the space with the maroon. The three bangaii just kind of hangout, the six-line roams around, and we also have a algae blenny that just sits on the rocks and watches the show. She eats more meat than algae though.
The maroon likes the attention and does seem to enjoy interacting with people and other fish. It really is a fun tank. And I do highly recommend the six-line. I just got a second one to control the frag tank. His job is to keep pods and flat worms under control. We'll see if he succeeds.

Personally I would go with a blackcap basslet. Very beautiful fish that can stand his ground. REally added some nice color to our tank
