New Frags

Some say vertical and some say horizontal. I've had better luck mounting them vertical. I use super glue gel to mount them to a frag plug or a small piece of rock.

Most will tell you either use superglue or epoxy. I like superglue gel. Epoxy reportedly irritates coral tissue. I usually superglue the frag to a small rock so I can move the rock around the tank until I find a spot where the frag is happy.

I mount my frags vertically too, usually. I think horizontally mounted makes a better base, but I just cant bring myself to shove half a frag face down into the glue. :D

Depending on the frag and if i'm mounting to a piece of rubble,i like to use a very thin rubberband. Then take it off in a month or so after the frag is attached.Altho sometimes i forget and the corals just grow over them.otherwise i use super glue gel

was using epoxy/putty stuff...tunze brand....it was just OK but then tryed out superglue and man is that the way to go...dries quickly and no mess....that and you dont get the thick base of putty where you mount it...its an eyesore for me

superglue gel all the way, i say horizontally, i have experienced quicker growth that way.

Not to be different but I like the 2 part epoxy. For several reasons.

you can take a marble size piece and mush it in a crack or hole in the live rock and push the frag in it. I do no know how I would take out the Live rock and super glue on a frag, that is in my tank.

Must have pressed submit by mistake.

2. The acro will quickly encrust the epoxy base since there is nothing else growing on it. A couple bases I made about 1" across and the acro encrusted it all.

3. I have never had any problem with rtn. etc. with epoxy. I know reefermadness is a strong opponent of epoxy.

ONE must observe point!, Epoxy makes your skimmer go nuts. You must turn it off or really lower the level temporally for about 2 days.

Super glue seems to be very popular and you can not go wrong with it, but just though it would be good to have a 2nd opinion.

I superglue the frag to a smaller rock and then superglue the rock into its final position after I find a spot the frag is happy. Sometimes I will just glue a frag to a large piece of rock right in the tank... does anyone else do this? The superglue turns into a soft putty like consistency when you use it underwater, so I just kind of push it into cracks and things. Hard to explain. :P

I use a combo :). I place superglue gel first, then put a wad of epoxy next then superglue gel on the top and shove the coral into this epoxy/superglue gel sandwich. Mostly I do this for large pieces. Like my colony of stoddarti that I needed to hang out over space so it could table nicely and provide some shaded areas for my lower light corals on the bottom. When I havea small frags I use the superglue gel exclusively. I agree the epoxy is unsightly but eventually the corals will grow over it. I don't really have any issues with irritated coral bases with thte 2-part epoxy.

That is another problem with epoxy it does make your skimmer go nuts...so whenever i used it i put the frag that i just used the epoxy on in a bucket of tank water for an hour and then put it back in the display...this solves that problem....but superglue is just "plug and play" thats why i prefer it.

I never irritated a coral with epoxy eihter...at least on the base..though one time i had some on my finger and rubbed it on the side of the acro accidentally and that frag is still working on getting better in the spot in question.

I've used both. I like using the epoxy better, I think its easier to mount them how I want. I like how the frags encrust over the epoxy too. I have had trouble with epoxy on frags, but only ones that weren't well taken care of before hand. Frags I've got from other very good aquarists do just fine in it.

And vertical

ok.. would you rather have whats in my avatar.. or the one below.. the avatar was before i mounted it horizontally... the pic below is after a month or two: cheap camera at the time.. pic is horrible.. but you get the idea.. thats an Oregon Blue Tort from travis at Upscales. Gotta love

People should specify which 2 part epoxy they use. IME, aquastik not only makes your skimmer go crazy, but will kill the surrounding tissue of the coral. Aquamend will not harm the coral tissue, even in direct contact, and does not make my skimmer go nuts. Also, many etailers void their guarantee if you use epoxy, so double check that.
