Hey guys, got this new red gorg. and wanted some advise on light and flow. I have it sitting next to the blueberry gorg, but it is only opening just a little as you can see in the photo
Thanks in advance for any info.

That looks like Diodogorgia nodulifera. They like lots and lots of linear flow. I have 4 of them, and the fastest growing one is 1/2" directly in front of my MP10, it is even growing towards the pump.

They are quite hardy IME. When they are healthy the polyps are huge and can eat frozen Cyclopeeze. If they have been starved the polyps will be smaller and you should start with rotifers, BBS, FM seafan, ultra min F, etc...

Thanks Uhuru! What will more light do to it, I can move him up in the tank and get him in direct linear flow.

Mine are on top of the tank, they don't care about light. With that said, they grow algae quite easily on their tissue. Lots of flow will help, but you may need to do cleaning of your own as well. I would aim to feed them small amounts 10x/day unless you have some sort of continuous feeding set up (this of course works best and they stay open 90% of the time). They will close if there is no food in the water, whether it is light or dark (like I said they don't care).

thanks Uhuru, I will move it up. With as much feeding as you do how often do you change your water if I might ask. We have a 180gal and are doing a 20% water change every 2 weeks and are still fighting algae with all the feeding. We are considering a refugium, what do you think.

I do daily water changes :)

If you want to keep these guys I definitely recommend upping your wc's to at least 20% weekly and see how it goes - you may have to do more. I don't run a refugium but I know others do. Maybe ask reefmonger about his algae turf scrubber, that might be more efficient than a fuge. In the end nothing beats water changes for these guys. Nutrients build up no matter what kind of filtration you use.

Well with that being said, I need to stop buying gorgs. Uhuru you might just be my husband's new best friend. We just purchased a 120gal for our bed room and I know he is not going to agree to a weekly water change on both of these.
Yea I am an addict:lmao:

:( so sad.......mine hasn't had the first sign of opening up yet. I did place it in heavy flow when I placed it in the tank, but nothing so far. Going to do a water change tomorrow and see if that will help. Oh, almost forgot, Doorlady you did forget to ask if they like cooler temps as I'm thinking we both run our tanks around 77 degrees...what's your input on temps Uhuru?

I have been keeping my tank at 72-74 with good results. I ran my tank at 77 before with no ill effects. It would make sense that they like cooler temps though.

that's kinda what Bill(doorlady's hubby) was thinking today at work when we were havin our daily tank talk :) thanks for the qiuck reply Uhuru

It may take a long time for that gorg to attach to the rock. How tightly does that rubber band hold it in there? What I did for mine was gently scrape the tissue off the bottom with a razor blade, then use epoxy + superglue to attach it to the rock.

the rubberband isn't really holding it.....it barely touches it ..it is just there incase it starts to fall...it's kinda in a whole in the rock.
I'm kinda scared to cut at it's tissue as I've not done any fragging of any sorts except snipping up a dieing stoney. I've only been in the hobby for a lil over a year now but have a great and reliable helper, my brother-in-law whom has been reefing for a long time and is always glad to help with most anything that I need help with or at least give me directions to get to the answer. Afterall, it is Doorlady's fault I'm addicted:lol2:

Oh, forgot to mention that a few polyps have opened so hopefully it's gonna do fine. thanks for all the input and info Uhuru
