new guy questions

Hi everybody its been a long since my last salwater adventure. My question is about overflows, which ones have worked for you , I'm just trying to avoid buying something more then once. I have a 55gl FOWLR so far in the middle of it's cycle. My stand will only allow a 10 gl sump so 600 gph overflow sounds about right. So without building a new stand and draining the tank the 10gl will have to do for awhile. I'm going to try and build the sump myself with plexi walls and eggcrate. If all else fails I can go rubbbermaid next to tank and **** off the wife with my decorating style. SO overflow and sump ideas are appreciated and needed. I tried asking at a few lfs but the answer is always what they have in stock, I don't need anymore swamp land.

Man if only you had hit these boards before you started your tank!!
We could have drilled it for you and then you would never need to worry about overflowing again..
Dang..

Well I know nothing about overflows because I only drill tanks..
Sorry :(

I will have a lifereef double and single overflow for sale very soon!

the single is 700GPH and double 1400GPH.

There arent any better overflows on the market in my opinion.

Electricity goes out they will not overflow when the electricity comes back on the overflow will start right up.

The construction on these are also top notch!

$70 for the single and $120 for the double.

They are a bit pricey but i think worth it.

here is the website

Not to hijack... I just sent you a PM on the Lifereef prefilters.

I second that about Lifereef, definitely top-notch fabrication!

Thanks for all the help and imfo Ed, and funman I have 2/10gallons that need to be drilled so they can be tied together under the stand. The stand has a partition and I can fit one tank on each side. ie... no more furniture to build.

when to sump

when to sump

12 days into cycle and here are my numbers so far yeaterday---Amon-.25, ph 8.1, NI- 3 to 4, NA 10, kh holding at 10, now today Amon- 0 to .25, ph 8.1, NI- 2 to 3, NA 5 , kh same... how long should i wait until starting a sump. I didnt' start with one because I was still buying parts right now I have 2 powerheads for flow and a 400gph biowheel still new form my fw tank, I got the overflow from edsimmons, thanks ed. I've got 2 - 10 gl tanks to use and one 55gl tank. A mag 7 for pumping and I'm looking for a used skimmer to throw in. I'm not sure of the design yet as a 55gl sump for 55gl tank would look strange and be overkill, not to mention the wall space needed. I'm thinking the 2- 10's bulkheaded together would work great. Refuge one and filter in the other, Gotta find someone for drillin glass or would it be best to buy a 20L and divide it.. lookin for suggestions here. remember I'm new so please don't get too techy. Thanks

The self starting over flows are really a nice way to go. Especially if they come with the self starting pump. Drilling can entail complex plumbing. Overflows are plug and play. My tank is drilled and my brothers has an over flow like Ed is selling. My bro's plumbing is far less complex than mine, and was very easy to set up.
