So i've browsed here a time or two but just now joined :)

So I'll start my experiance here with a question. I just got a powder brown tang and he's got a lil bit of a discoloration. Is this the infamous ick i've heard about? He still eats fine and swims around normally. More than my blue hippo. Here are some pics! any help would be appriciated! sorry for the crappy quality of pics but it's hard to get him to sit still! lol

It's hard to say. It doesn't look like salt sprinkled on him (which could indicate ich). More splotchy from the pics. Get him out of the main display and into quarantine if you have it.

I haven't gotten a quarantine tank yet. I've been thinking of buying a small tank for just such occasions? I've been reading about it and see so many different oppinions on how to set one up it makes it hard to deciede..

They can be remarkably basic. A tank, light, simple mechanical filter, hiding places (PVC pieces work well), and a heater will do. I also like a little additional air from an airstone and a pump. A lot of drugs can mess with your dissolved oxygen.

Remember that everything that is attached to and used in the quarantine needs to be disinfected at some point so going overboard with accessories is unnecessary.

Once set up, monitoring chems and doing frequent water changes is necessary. Don't worry about putting biological filtration on it as most drugs that you would use would kill off any beneficial bacteria anyway.

I'm sorry. No it doesn't look good. I see that you have at least one invert in there that is ok, so I don't think it's your chems. Did he look like that at the store?

So would a say 10 gallon tank be fine? So you set it up and just let it run? You start from scratch or do you use the water from established tank? I may run to petsmart and pick up a cheap tank if they have one? once running do you just run it always or just when you need it?

I've checked all levels PH is 8.4, nitrite is 0, nitrate is around 10-20 i believe and amonia is good to. All other fish seem fine. I ordered him off of petco because our LFS here closed ugh. I've used them before and had great experiance but this time there were no cooling pads and they didn't inform me of shipment so they sat on my door for an hour before i knew they were there. Several fish and shrimp were already dead. He looked fine at first but i'm worried about the guy. They said they'll replace any that die but that doesn't mean i just want him to die.. i'd love to save him if i could.

That explains a lot. Sounds like shipping stress. How did he look in the bag before you put him in the tank and did you acclimate him before putting him in?

Ten might be a little small for some fish, this one included. I would go for 15-20gal.
Yes you can set it up with water from the main. Then keep an eye on the chems as it will try to cycle. Perform frequent water changes to keep the ammonia and nitrate in check until it does. When you are done quarantining one round of fish it is best to decontaminate before adding more fish. At that point you could cycle the Q tank with your system water and something that has been "seeded" in the tank (such as a sponge if you choose to use a sponge filter or a Whisper cartridge bag if you go for a Whisper type filter. Then you would bve ready for the next round of new fish.

Yes I let him float for about 45 mins then added a 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup every 5 mins. Discarded half the bag then did it over again. He seemed fine swimming around and all till yoday

Came in Thursday. Tank has been running for 3 years. 90 gallons with a 40 gallon sump. Did a water change 2 days before he came in.

Well thanks for your help but by the time i got back from petsmart with a 20 gallon tank and other stuff is was a goner :( damn you petco! damn you!

so when i get my replacement i should first introduce him into the QT? then into DT?

Should i be worried for my other fish at all?

blenny, foxface, blue hippo, clown and three stripe damsel. 1 of each

I'm sorry to hear that. Usually once they lay down there isn't much you can do. I commend you for trying so hard.
When your new fish come, acclimate them to you qt. you should keep them there for at least 30 days. If any of them die then restart the 30 days. If they present with any illness, treat accordingly. I will look later on for a reference that you can use to identify diseases/parasites.

Do keep a close eye on your other fish. If what you saw looked like salt sprinkled on the fish, that would indicate ich most likely and is highly contagious. From the images it looked like a splotchy appearance which could indicate uronema. Also contagious.

If you need more help, always feel free to ask.

That's a great page! thanks so much i'm gonna print it out so i always have it on hand! I'm gonna order a selection of chemicals to have on hand for emergancies! thanks so much for all the help.. hope the next one will be better! I think this guy just got way to stressed out. My first order the fish came in with ice packs and were chilled down so they weren't even moving until i acclimated them and they warmed up.. when these guys came in they were so hot i had to cool them down!

You're welcome. (Sorry, fell asleep and then had work all day.)

Do look into the shelf life of the chemicals before you buy them. Some can be pricey and won't last forever.

Good luck
