New Hydor pump

Im runnin 4 k4s in my 180, plenty of movement but it seems like any type of debris in the tank will suck up the open design on the k4s. Also they are a bit noisy. For the money though they cant be beat.

dhnguyen is right. The 2's and 3's were recalled because of the stray voltage. Hydor is great to deal with. Contact them and send the pumps back for replacement.

I don't think there is any set formula but there are a couple of things to think about. Think about the fact that there are lots of different corals with lots of different flow (and light) needs. There are lots of different configurations and ways to set up the powerheads to create different flow patterns to accommodate the different species in one tank and the thing I think about most is their natural environment. There are not many spots on the reef that does not have decent flow.

Yeah.. but I don't know if 45x water change is seen all over the reef. I am sure that there are species that need high flow but I am concerned about putting tiny clowns in that kind of flow. It seems like having two k3s in a 37 gallon would give the clowns no places where they can seek refuge from the current.

Is there a max flow rate that different fish would like and not feel stressed by? In this case a small clown. We do want to get a nice assortment of soft corals... but we would stay away from species that would need a rate of flow greater than the clowns can handle. I was just very surprized by the flow rates that some others here are going for. Is it normal to go for 30-40x the volume of the tank flows? Is is normal to have that much flow when you have a mixed reef with fish?

Thanks

It all depends on each individual tank and how the rock is positioned and where the pumps are pointed, etc. In a tank with extensive live rock the flow is dispursed and fish are not getting blown around in a direct line of current.

In a 37 like you describe in an earlier post, I think a pair of K1's or a single K3 would be fine. Most of the guys doing high circulation are growing sps. maybe a k3 down low pointed up for a softy tank. just my two cents

I agree with HowardW.........I like a lot of LR to give fish and inverts lots of places to hide which also gives them lots of protection from any current that is too strong.

Keep in mind also that the Koralias give a very dispersed stream as opposed to the direct current of a lot of powerheads out there.

Thank you for the link to Bruce Azzarito's email. I sent him a brief email explaining the problem and inquiring if my pair of Korallia 2's were covered by the recall. When I know more, or hear back, I will post here.

Nick

He should get back to you very soon. He and Hydor were great to deal with. No hassles at all.

Good luck.

I had some broken ceramic shafts for my k-3's. I emailed him about them. The next day he emailed me back and had replacements in the mail that day. A solid guy and company.

I was wondering why they went to Ceramic. my replacement K3's have the new ceramic shafts. Ceramic is fine for large pumps where the shafts are larger diameter but these are like twigs. Did you break them cleaning the pump or did they just break in operation?

They broke when taking the pump apart to clean. You need to be extreamly careful when putting the shroud back on. These snap like twigs. Some people have used titanium shafts from MJmods.

I was told they made the move to the ceramic shafts because the Germans told Hydor in Italy that ceramic was the only way to go. You have to be very careful or they will break without any effort. Hydor does replace them free of charge. I'll bet they go back to the stainless steel.

Remember what happened last time the Italians listened to the Germans?

Anyway this is a bad idea switching to ceramic IMO. The fact that ceramic breaks extremely easily far outweigh the little performance gain if any you get from using ceramic to cut down on resistance. Better to go back to stainless steel IMO.

Good one! I was thinking along the same line but can't put it any better than that.

The email I sent to Mr Azzarito.....
Mr Azzarito,

On 01-23-2007, I ordered a pair of Korallia 2's from Dr's Foster & Smith for
my 58 gallon reef aquarium. I was very happy with the flow they provided,
until 5-13-07, when I discovered I had one shorting out and leaking stray
voltage into the water. I shut them both down and removed them from my tank.

I have been made aware of a recall involving the Korallia 2's and 3's, and
I'm hoping that my pair of Korallia 2's is covered by the recall. Can you
tell me if this is the case? If it is, where can I send them to?

Thank you for your time.

His reply

Hello Nick,

Yes, if you Koralias are effected by the defect, we will replace them for you. Please look on the label on the pump for the three digit lot number. If it's 649 or 703, you could have a defective pump. If the lot number is 713, then it is the new model. If you have a defective Koralia, please send it to the following address along with your name, address and phone number.

Thanks for contacting Hydor USA with your Question,

Checking the 3 digit number he's talking about, mine are both 650's....

We'll see what he says.

Nick

Does anyone know or hear when Hydor will come out their own controler to control those hydor pump?
I have my on the seio controler now, but wnodeing will Hydor relase something different with more control function?

Nick,

Yes, just send them to us at the address below and we will send you new ones.

Bruce

Looks like I'll be sending them in for new ones....

How are they working with the Seio controller?

Nick

I have read that others are using the controller, but from the info on the seio controller, it was not designed to handle the higher wattage pumps. The Hydor people told me they are working on controllers and hope to have them available by the end of the year. Just in time for Christmas.
