New identification resource

Yes, the data from the aims site is under a free-to-redistribute license, and as the site is virtually impossible to use and has been all but abandoned, it seemed reasonable to try making the information usable again.

And what better way to advertise a forum you're coincidentally an admin on than to host that info on there and go forum to forum promoting it right :)

Your kidding right? Aims is a mess, the index has been broken for years and the only way to search the site is via a google search with site:http://data.aims.gov.au and that doesn't pick up everything. (try doing a search for efflo, you have to get to it via soli)

SDMAS = San Diego Marine Aquarium Society or something like that, it's the local reef club in SD. It's not a public forum.

edit: and the design of aims is also wacky to use it keeps opening up new pop up windows, and you can't see multiple images.

Not arguing that AIMS isn't annoying as far as finding corals, just noting that these are hosted on a site that has sponsors, which I'm guessing uses traffic statistics for enticing more sponsors.

I don't follow you guy, there is no adverts/sponser, or links to any external sites or any where else (ie sdmas proper) on the coral list. No offense meant by this however I feel like you are instigating for the sake of instigation.

True, but web views on the corals list, which could be plenty, translates as better web traffic statistics for enticing sponsors. I'm not saying this isn't a good idea, it's just not the selfless great idea it could easily be confused for.

So your telling me, that a link to free information that has been reorganized for easier use, that is hosted on a domain for a non-profit local reef club, but in no way links to any other section of said non-profit webiste or has any sort of adverts on it. Put up by an ex-member of the club (she lives in the bay area now) on her own free time. Who built, maintains and HOSTS the website for free, on her own personal server. Some how has some other alternative evil agenda?

Well shoot I'll buy that for 19.99.

Wow, who said anything about evil?

My bad though, I mistook you for an unbiased third party instead of a cheerleader, carry on...

Well you are making it sounds like she has some alternative agenda here, and I can assure you this is not the case.

She isn't the one linking to a pay to play for profit information site from her profile as you do. Yet you are quick to jump on her case, and insult me.

Yes you are correct I am not an impartial third party. We are friends.

I mocked her profusely while she was building it, saying that her site would make me no longer a Coral ID hero here on RC. Which would result in me loosing access to the many coral ID groupies that I am able to "meet" with every year at macna.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that nobody else finds this link or I won't be asked to do any more private "IDs", during that one sweet week a year when us reefers pull out the big jugs for our ATO leave our dimly blue lit apartments and meet under cover the of the moonlight, well rum, and a cheap motel.

Like I said, the AIMS index is a good idea, it also happens to be beneficial in other ways is all. It's not an evil thing, just a factual thing. I bookmarked the site because I like it, I'll use it, and I'm sure rc is going to delete it the link once they catch on, I just wish it wasn't on a server that also had sponsors because I'm a cynical weenie like that :)

edit - the reason I bring it up is because I get sponsorship emails from forums all the time, and their selling points are always, without fail, a) user count, and b) unique monthly website views.

I don't usually log on to rc at home, but wanted to apologize for sounding so *****y. Had a long annoying day at work that put me off a bit and I shouldn't have dragged my crappy day into anyone else's. This is something that someone obviously put a lot of work into, it looks great, will be very useful, and doesn't need any of my cynical douchebaggery bogging it down, my bad :)
