new in town; had a few questions

the Undone guy

New member
Hi everyone! I've recently moved to Tucson and had a few quick questions:

First off - are there only 2 true salt water stores in town? I've had some pretty bad experiences with both of them so far so I was hoping there was a hidden gem somewhere I may have missed.

Secondly - what stores in Phoenix would recommend I visit? I'm interested in quality nano-fish and possibly a few frags. I'm willing to pay a little more for something that isn't going to die on me right away.

I'll be happy to introduce myself as soon as RC stops acting like a three toed sloth

Thanks!

Sea and gq are the main two. Tropical kingdom has saltwater. Petco on oracle always has good healthy fish.

In phoenix reef culture, the aquarius and reefmonsters are my favorites, the first having the best selection.

i would say the hidden gem is the members of this forum. We have frag swaps that are well attended with a wide variety of items. We share good advice and trade or sell equipment, frags and fish..ect.

Welcome to the group

Welcome! Liveaquaria is my hidden jem, cheaper prices and I don't have to pay for gas to drive all over the place:)

Welcome there are the PETCOs around town and SEA, GQ fish, tropical kingdom, and another one on oracle rd but I cant remember the name. The best time to get corals is at a frag swap. I would think maybe in March we should be about due again. You're right RC is super slow recently..

Welcome. Did you bring it up to the staff or owner of either store that you had a bad experience? If so what was their response? I'm not defending anything they did, however for those of us that have been in town and have quit patronizing any of the stores, keep in mind that these guys are local, our money spent in the hobby stays here for the most part, by going straight to the Internet or phx the money doesnt help people and families in Tucson. Those people then spend money here on other goods and services here in town helping others locally. Even if you aren't a regular patron of either, sooner or later you may need a bulkhead, water, or place to house your livestock in an emergency. By not supporting anything local these places may not be around when you need it. Let's face it, the saltwater community here isn't growing much.

I would say that the sw community here is shrinking even, remember when you could go to Garys Fishorama and pick up 50 lbs of live rock, a timer and a couple powerheads for $80… We miss you man

Yea those were the days, not to mention $5 frags he would sell. Loosing Gary was a HUGE loss for our community!

I hear ya man and I consider some of the owners, employees and managers of the stores friends but they gotta get better. It's no coincidence that all the new people that come to this town are like "what the heck". Honestly I have taken a lot of my business to the Internet and it has nothing to do with prices, it has to do with superior customer service. In fact I probably pay more $$$ cause I gotta pay for shipping which cost me more only being available Saturdays. I've honestly been biting my tongue on this issue for a while and have kept quiet cause I really like most of the guys affiliated with the LFS in this town. I love when this town gets together for swaps and have always thought it would be cool to have a club. I do still jump in my car and drive across town to check out the livestock and almost never buy anything anymore. Maybe we can turn this thread into a tool for the local stores to use? Instead of turning this into a bashing thread, let these stores know what they can do better. What would everyone like to see be better? Please keep it kind but to the point. Ill add a few. Hopefully mods will let his one stay and understand these businesses would not benefit from sponsorship and this feedback is for the customers not for advertisement purposes. Please do understand that this thread won't last long if its taken as bashing, keep it cool everyone. Also if we can let's keep store names out of it.

Here is a few things I'd like to see myself, I gotta confess I'm not completely familiar with all the different store policies so some of these things might already be happening. Also different stores have different issues, don't assume I'm talking about just one store.

Clean store and tanks
- I never want to see a dead fish on the bottom of a tank
- Algae happens but the bottoms of the tanks shouldn't be covered in it.
- Sickly fish should be moved out of view, nobody's gonna buy them in that state anyway, It makes me really nervous to purchase a fish from a tank when there's another fish with full blown ich or a nasty case of lymphocytes.
- The floor is gonna be wet at times after all its a fish store but there is a difference between a little wet and just plain nasty.

Guarantee on fish
- this one is kinda weird cause you gotta understand some customers aren't doing what they should be especially those new to the hobby. I myself occasionally have expensive taste in fish and it would be great to have a little insurance that I'm getting a healthy fish for my investment. It's hard to drop the cash locally when I know the vendor I use on line is gonna take care of me with almost no questions asked.

Competitive pricing
- I'm not expecting wholesale prices but if I can order it online including shipping for less your over priced IMO. I completely understand the stores gotta make money too but they gotta be competitive, if I can get that $200 fish for $89 online, guess where Im gonna get it. I love to spend my money locally but I gotta eat too. Another big issue with me is with prices being easy for the customer to find. This should never be or seem like a guess. I think I speak for everybody, employees and customers a like when say nobody wants to play "how much is this", " how much is this" etc etc......

Honesty
- If you say your gonna do something, do it. If for some reason you can't, communication is key. This goes a long way with guarantee too, if you offer to replace a bad purchase write it down and make sure it happens. Good intentions only stay good if they are followed through with. A store log that is followed during ordering goes along way but only when it's used.

To all concerned I hope this is more useful than offensive, many of you have my number, if you feel the need to talk about anything more please pick up the phone. I'm very pationate about this hobby and have been around a long time and I'm willing to help any way possible to make the reef scene better in this town.

Agreed. I can't disagree on too many points, the only one that's hard for me to agree with is price, its hard to keep up with utilities, wages, insurance, marketing, livestock cost, livestock loss, and maintence on lights water and equipment, and still give a guy a break on price. Keep in mind I'm not affiliated with a shop anymore, however in the last 10 years I've been in 3 of them either full time or part time. It's hard for a guy to see an Internet price and expect a similar or lower price at a lfs when the the guy can't sell in enough volume to keep up with a large Internet site who is able to trans ship and has a warehouse to keep stock in. The guy with the storefront has to still buy it, ship it, house it, feed it, and then keep the doors open, much less make a buck or two. If the guy had more of the communities support he can do more volume and pass the volume pricing on the the local consumer.

The other side of the coin, I've been
The employee with the phone ringing non stop, the ro overflows, and the skimmer blows up, and I'm still trying to be of help when the customer comes in and sees display tanks not at their best. The store owner either can't afford to pay the guy to come in early and prep, or have a 2nd guy cleaning full time. However it doesn't excuse **** poor service, arrogance, or just being plain rude. That is inexcusable.

To wrap my disjointed post up, I can see why the hobbiest who walks into a lfs and has a bad time, or can barely afford the hobby to begin with, will go to the Internet for their hobby needs to save a few dollars to get their livestock and supplies. And I can see where the store owner may not be able to make live stock dirt cheap to match Internet prices. But there has to be some ground to give on both sides. The store can step it up to make your experience a pleasant one, that doesnt cost anything. And the customer can make an effort to be constructive and at least tactfully and constructivly let the store know how they can do better and give the shops a chance. I had a great time at the last frag swap, and the venue was great, the store owner provided food, had a sale that day, gave away raffle prizes, and gave up weekend sales numbers to help the local hobby community out. Let's continue to support local buisness

Well said I try to spend as much as I can to support the local LFS however I am purchasing most of my frags from maybe 2 very well known Reef Central members John Coppolino "COPPS" has been getting the majority of my SPS business, however I have been trying to buy my food, salt, fish and anything else that I can from our local LFS.

Pricing really hasn't been too big an issue for me honestly, the two stores I shop at have been pretty good at keeping up with retail prices or in some cases better. It's hard for me to drop good money and assume all the risk though. Im fine paying retail but I want a guarantee. I'd even be willing to absorb a stocking fee, kinda like I do with shipping for online orders.

Boa, can't argue with you, Copps stuff is top notch.

I agree completely, and I don't care about 100% clean tanks but it should not feel like I'm buying a used car every time I go into a LFS. For instance I expect them to be honest when identifying fish. On several occasions a LFS employee has sold or told me that a fish in his store is something which clearly it is not. I'm much more experienced now so that doesn't work on me but come on seriously? Like I'm not going to find out later that you either a.) lied or b.) didn't put enough effort in to properly identify something you were trying to sell. Both of which are completely unacceptable.

Another thing I cannot stand: I ask if a fish is eating, they give me a strange look, say yes and then throw everything into the tank only to find out the fish is not eating. So I buy the fish to try to get it to eat. The fish dies because it has a disease and I'm trying to medicate it. I bring the fish back to the store and they ask what happened like it was something I did. When I purchase online I get a no question asked guarantee and several of the vendors will extend the warranty if something unforeseen happens. Not to mention the mortality rate of these vendors seems much higher than the LFS. So if a LFS wants to compete they had better give the same guarantee (without being hassled when I bring back a dead fish).

IMO the customer service has much to be desired. I partially blame that on the small Tucson market. That level of service would never work in a large city because people would not shop there and they would go out of business. So if the LFS wants more business they have to be competitively priced and provide outstanding customer service. If they do not I will be happy to spend my money with companies that do (aka live aquaria).

There have been threads like this in the past where large amounts of constructive criticism was posted. I'm not sure if it helps.
