the reason to start off easy is so you can learn the basics of growing your own foods to raise the baby fish. if you can't even grow your own phyto, rotifers, brine shrimp, cocopods, ect. you will not even have a chance at raising any baby fish.
and yes it is great to watch a group of fish of the same type all together like my video of my growout tank, to bad they can't stay this peaceful for ever lol
also remember sence you have never kept a marine tank you will need to get that down also as if the tank parameters arn't good stable, and the fish don't feel safe then no fish will breed in your tanks.
Ok. I'll see if I can download a version. My dad has kept a marine tank when I was growing up but it smashed when someone knocked furniture hard into the corner and it exploded. Very sad and angry day for everyone. Dad never had another tank after that. It was a mixed reef 4ft. Can't remember the fish but we did have a starfish and clowns. So not completely new but my chore was cleaning the glass with the magnet every 2 days : )
I am aware tank chemistry is critical but was not aware that they will not breed if its not perfect. Thanks. I'll definitely be designing a system that incorporates excellent water quality as a result. As a chemist it would be embarrassing to have less than perfect water quality lol
No not when there young. Even when adults I have heard (as long as there from the same hatching) they will get along fine, given the tank is large enough and has plenty of area for them to hide and evade pursuers.
You could try collecting larvae from main display from a breeding group of dwarf angels of some kind. A small harem could work.
I take care of a tank with about 150 mixed ocellaris and percula clowns. They rang from 2 inches to nearly 4 inches. All are wild caught and have been in the display for between 10 months (ocellaris) and 3 months (perculas). Granted it is a fish only artificial reef about 6000 gallons.
With a big enough tank it is possible. Also having large fish around keeps grouping behavior intact as well. There are a number of large angels and triggers in that system as well.
6000 gallons!! Wow that's a big tank. So a few big fish will bring out more grouping behaviour from the small guys. Sounds like a good idea. Not going to try collect eggs from the main tank only from the breeder tanks.
If you are breeding clowns or any other substrate spawners then it doesn't make sense to breed in a display. If you are looking to breed pelagic spawners however like dwarf angels then you can set up a larvae collector and collect the larvae from the display to try to rear.
Pelagic spawners tend to breed more often but have larvae that are smaller and therefore harder to rear.
I read recently that lathe groups of chromis just kill each other off. Are there any other oprions out there? Surely there are some great fish that do well in large groups in home aquariums
