thats 12, I do have a few more people that may be interested, so lets give it a little more time.

Frank lets see what they say, communication was tough since our day is their night. There are no moon lights or a timer on my fixture, although I did say that I wanted a cheap, no frills, light.
I got a response back and there is no additional cost for the seperate white and blue control. But the leds are not mixed every other like a checker board. they will be in lines white. blue. white. blue. but since they will be building them for us you can have it the other way if you choose.

Tom,
pm me your email address and I will forward the email they sent to me. This unit has the moonlights and a timer/controller and I think the price is similar. The manufacturer stemmed from your link, (multiple suppliers popped up and this was one of the responses I received). Maybe you can post the pic I received.
Frank

It probably depends on how many we order because they will be building them for us. If I remember right it took about two weeks to get mine.

Just wanted to give an update. Frank and I are looking into other options that could be included in the light like moonlights and timers.

Ahh ok i was wondering. Id like to order whatever were gonna go with soon before i spend my christmas tips LOL

Sorry communtications are are slow going due to the extreme time difference and language barrier. It seems like the lights we were planning on getting will be our best bet. Just a few more days and we will have a solid answer.

How does everyone want to arrange payment. Obviously I don't mind collecting the money and submitting the order, but if someone else really wants to do it, thats fine. No offense to everyone here, but I don't want to order a unit for you unless I have the payment, sorry but I've been burned too many times. I will take cash or paypal (paypal plus 3%). Now is the time to let me know if there are any more orders, I can't give a price until I have a final count.

Hey - can a guy from Ohio ask a question - seems like this is a NY only thread!

I am working on my first build, still in planning stages. I will start with softies and fish, but want to buy equipment that will allow me to do handle more difficult livestock if/when I want to. Really leaning toward the 60g Marineland 24x24x24 cube and I have been torn on going with a 6x24" T5HO or a single MH pendant. Now that I have seen this, though, I am thinking it is a GREAT option, since I am starting "greenfield" and won't be replacing an existing fixture. Unfortunate that I can't get in on your buy, but still seems like a nice green, economical lighting solution.

Do you think one 120w unit would handle the 24x24x24 without limitations?
Could I run this unit under a custom-built hood? (I am building it, so I would design to get the height over the water correct and would make sure there was adequate ventilation.)
If I go with the 2010 version with the moon lights, would there be any advantage to having them place the moon lights in the 4 corners (using 12 instead of 10) to spread the light, or would that negatively impact the look?

This looks like a great find!

I think that you would have limits, I'm still a bit skeptical whether it is appropriate for sps with very high lighting requirements.
Yes you can run it under a custom hood, I am.
Good luck asking them about any modifications, we are having a hell of a time.

I wouldn't mind shipping one to you if you wanted to order with us.

The group buy on MR is also for 1-watt LEDs, the only product on the market that has 3+ watt LEDs in their units are the Aqua Illuminations or the defunct PFO Solaris.
The units are cheap enough to experiment with but everyone needs to realize that there is no controllability with these units. As an example, if your control unit failed on a PFO Solaris, it would run $500 to replace the unit and does not include the mother board associated with this.
I would say 1/3rd is the cost of the actual controller for any controllable unit on the market. Focal lenses is also another cost at anywhere from $0.45 to a dollar and change for each LED utilized so you can do the math.
You can buy on/off retro 1-watt 36 blue/white LED panels with cheap focal lenses already wired for $155, there is no heat sinks or cooling fans, just the LEDs mounted to an aluminum board with focal lenses and a laptop power supply so the chinese units fair much better in terms of cost.

What about DIY LED's with Cree XRE/XPG/ and the stupid XPE? Theyre all 3 watts and thats what alot of people who do smaller reefs use. Not quite sure if id be violating forum rules by saying this, but there are alot of buiild threads on nano-reef.com on how to use and make these fixtures. Solaris is actually kinda stupid since they under-drive thier 3w LED's so theyre kinda being wasted. (Probably why they where so expensive since they used arrays of tens of LED's when they could have probably used half the amount and drove them at full power) With the Cree's you can easily get the same amount of PAR as you would with MH and much more. Althought its not quite exonomicly feasible for larger deeper tanks as of right now, you can still use these for smaller shallower tanks or if you have the money, get optics and you can go as deep as you want

You can put me down for two. If they last and my tank is happy, I plan on changing all my lights over. As the speaker at the last meeting said, the price will go down and quality will go up astronomically over the next few years.

andy that light has 225 leds and is only 13.8 watts. remember watt wingo said, not all leds will keep coral alive, and some will kill coral. but I guess for $39 its worth a try.

Andy,
Someone on MR talked about that DIY light and he said that after a few hours, half the lights were out and he smelled a burning odor. He summarized that they cannot handle the humidy/moisture over an open top tank.

I haven't seen too many of these LED's but they seem almost too bright at times. do you find there is a lot of diffusion? Your pics look really great with the comparison LED / MH.
