new led lights

do these new LEd lights like the panorama have enough par or whatever to grow corals? how do you know what lights are good or not?

They are 'ok'. You would need a decent amount of them to equal a halide or what not. I think for my 14g nano I would need 2 or 3 strips of them to put out the light equal to my halide.

Yes, LED's produce more then enough PAR to grow corals. Underdriven 3w LEDs tend to do better then a large bank of 1w LEDs but it really depends on tank depth. If your tank is less then 20" deep, a fixture such as the Panorama would be fine. For a deeper tank, look at the Aqua Illumination, Maxcap, or Par38 bulbs. There is a lot of information on this in the lighting and equipment forum. Also read some of the articles at Reef Builders and Glass Box Design.

reefrandy check out this post (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1761942) there are some good details and par reading. I think you will see intensity is not an issue with the 3w LEDS. I am really intrigued by these and if I had any electronics experience I would try and build a fixture (is still might give it a try.) The panorama modules and fixtures use 1w LEDs and although they might work the 3w are much better.
