new LTA - so you say it won't last

We just got a pink/purple LTA.

our tank is a 20g tall. It only has 2 24" VHO's for lighting, and 2 15w PC that alternate lighting.

so then i get on here to see what people are doing, and i read that if they are not in large tanks with high flow and mega lighting - it will die.

so far, it opened up and buried in the sand right away. seems to be very happy and looks larger than when in the store.

The wife wanted to get a pair of gold stripe maroons, but then i read they are bad and beat up the anenome's, but i have seen so many of them together.

so, what do you think?

i think that LTA gets huge and need more light than that

good luck

Ps
Maroons get big but mine loved my LTA

Are you planning to upgrade your lights anytime soon?
As my purple lta was okay under 600 watts pc for about 3months. Colour stayed as i feed it regularily but it didn't get any bigger. When i put all the t5's on is when the size doubled in about 2.5 months.

600w pc and 48w vho are not the same lol

I think a tank and light upgrade is in need here
i love Anemones but most people dont realise what a 50 dollar anemone can end up costing just to keep it alive

I understand they are not the same. And i agree that more light is needed. I was just using my circumstances as a example that in some cases you can pull it off just not for very long:)

ben&bobbi why don't you put it in the tank that has the halides on it? Or is there just not enough room or not feesible?

my LTA lasted 4 months under 130wpc in my tank just fine(or so i thought) but it changed shape and color under 175w MH and within a month under halides it changed completely and outgrew my 29
it went to a guy in my local reef club and quickly outgrew his 180sps tank now it is another club members 220. we are thinking of making it the mascot just dont let them know i bought the nem for 12 dollars at petco :)

LMAO....to funny. I agree as soon as i added the t5's he got big FAST:)
It is easily the size of a large dinner plate now. Glad the 230's coming soon. He is gonna need the room i think.

yea in a 230 it might be ok;) i dont know how big these things get in the wild but i think a 30 inch M. dorensis is totally possible in the aquarium mine is 24 inches at least now and it was 9 inches a year ago
they also seem to enjoy soaking up light under 400w halides

my wife wanted a clown/anenome tank. The 180 is full of SPS and some softies and i didn't want the anenome to kill off the SPS's or have to move them out of his way! plus several fish that might be found as food!

so sounds like i will stunt his growth and he might live.

it's not 48w of VHO, they are 75each. it's a 20 gal, so that's about 7.5w/gal. i would have thought this would cover things.

Not considering size of the anenome, you have high wattage of lights, but also much larger tanks!

hansonfam - 12,39 watt t5 lights with ice cap reflectors on a 130 gives you about 3.6w.gal. (assuming that is 12 t5's at 39 watts each) not sure where the 600w came from. if that is on your 130, that's about 4.6w/gal.

If he does get too big i guess i will have to sell him.

are hermits and snails safe in there for cleaners? i removed them thinking the anenome would just eat them all.

also what are you feeding them. the store said small pieces of shrimp.

thanks
Ben

thats enough light i read it wrong i though it said 24w vhos not 24" vho

they get huge and yes you can sell him

hermits and snails are safe

they are not fish eating machines like you think but they do occaisionally eat a fish usually a sick or scarred fish

small peices of shrimp soaked in selcon is a good food for them if it wont eat that try Silversides

The 600 watts i stated was when i had pc's. And yes the t5's i have now are that much. Although they are just as bright as halides. They are all in there own reflectors which boost the output by 90% if i read correctly. I dunno and i really don't care:) All i know is that it is fine in there. I said that you could have it under the vho's as i did it with pc's. I read it the same as gsm guy about the wattage. It will be fine it will just grow quickly and you may have a new excuse to buy a bigger tank.

More than lighting I would be concerned about tank size.
Mainly keeping it away from inlets.
GSM's would be fine, and love it, just don't get GSM's that are too big for the nem.

since everyone asked, here's my LTA!

That's nice, where'd you get it?
I wanna know if it keeps that color.
Looking for a special nem for my new cube.

i'd say its slightly bleached.. if you look closely you can see the verrucae on the top left of the anemone.. its gonna get a lot deeper purple over time, it wont stay that color.

we got it at Fishy business in orlando.

I hope it gets darker, that's what she wanted. someone bought a darker one local and we went looking for another. she settled for this one!

verrucae on the top left of the anemone - i'll have to look up what that one means!

we need to get a pair of clowns for it. like i mentioned she wants the GSM, but anyone have a recommendation for ones that will compliment it?

GSMguy - how long do i soak the selcon before feeding?

I had an LTA for 1.5 years it was awesome and about the size of a basketball. when i upgraded to a 135 i couldnt get him off the glass and i ripped his foot, i felt sick to my stomach. I had a GSM in that thing and they were inseperable.

if you need help shoot me a PM and i can try to help.
Oh year the anemone thrived under 4x65watt PC on a 55.
