Ok guys for those of us who don't need this kind of detail which should it be. My dimensions are 84X28X25. I plan to use se 250 watt 10 bulbs with VHO atinic sumplementation. How any reflectors are required for complete coverage. Thanks..

I have both 10,000K and 12,000K reeflux bulbs that can be tested, assuming the HQI ballast is 250w. The 400w bulbs I have are Radiums and a 15,000K XM.
Ah, I'm interested in 400w results, but I'm sure testing the 250w would also provide some useful data. Is there anyone you could also borrow a 400w 12K ReefLux bulb from? ;)

5 larges if you can get them up high enough, if height is an issue then you will have to go with the minis. What ballast/bulb combo are you going to be using also plays a role.

I would just put three large LuminBrights over your tank. It is 1' longer than mine, and that gives you a little space between each reflector. You need plenty of height to raise them up where they belong to get good spread and avoid the spotlight effect.

The 250w bulbs will do fine with that tank. My tank is 72 x 30 x 30, if you wanted a comparison.

psteeleb put 5 reflectors (minis) over his 280 Tall, and three are on all day long ,while the other two only come on for one hour each day.

Maybe I can get access to some, but I can't promise.

7' tank... I would think 3 larges would do it assmuming the larges will spread 28". Otherwise, 4 minis would be good, but you might be lacking front to back spread.

Wow I was thinking 3 to 4 at most. I will use ishio 10K250watt with URI atenic suplementation. The ballast will be PFO electronic which I already have and would prefer to use unless there is a good reason not to.

Since you want the bulb to be 16 to 18" off the water, I would say that your canopy is too short presently.

if i can barge in on this thread, could someone help me with reflector height? i just ordered two lumen bright reflectors, i think they are the small ones... 16", with two 250 w DE phoenix bulbs and the bluewave7 dual 250w HQI ballast. my tank dimensions are 36"x 24"x 20"ht. i am primarly housing SPS and clams so i want as much light intensity as possible. i am currently using a 36" sunpod 2x 250w HQI fixture with the bulbs about 8 inches off the water surface. the tank is rimless with an open top. my question is, what height should i mount the lumen brights to get good coverage front to back without a lot of light spillage outside of the tank. thanks for your help.

here is a pic of my tank....a pic is worth a thousand words, right?...thanks again.

Melev Would a 15" canopy be enough height if I mounted them to the top of the canopy.

A 15" Canopy would mean the bulb would be 11" from the water due to the mogul socket being approximately 4" down from the top of the reflector.

My recommendation for these reflectors is a minimum 18" canopy giving you 14" from bulb to surface. 20" would be better as it gives you room to raise your lights to accomodate coral growth. You could get away with 12"-14" but only if the reflectors are stacked up against each other. I would not use 400w bulbs for this scenario though. 250's only please;)

Bubbletip and Melev-

I'd like to pick up a PAR meter. Marc, as I recall you had the Field Scout Quantum Light Meter ($199):

http://www.specmeters.com/Light_Meters/Quantum_Light_Meter.html

I've also heard the Apogee Quantum Meter with Separate Sensor model QMSS-E ($249) is good:

http://www.apogeeinstruments.com/quantummeter_options.htm

Any recommendations?

BTW, Melev - I love your Reefcast (if you haven't heard it, go straight to Itunes NOW). It is a 10 out of 10. Great humor, very educational, and a great way to pass the time while tinkering with my tank. Two thumbs up!
Cheers,
Los

Very nice looking tank and cramped what kind of fan r u running interested in picking some up

thanks tinnghe. the fans are just a couple of 5" ones i picked up at my LPS. not sure of the manufacturer, but i would imagine they are pretty common just about any place.

yeah, the tank is cramped. i think it's time for a larger one!

melev....any suggestions on how high above the water i should mount the lumen brights i have coming in with 250w DE phoenix 14k's? right now the sunpod in the pic is 8 inches above, would the lumen brights at that height cover the 24 inches front to back in your opinion? thanks

I feel like you'll need it raised higher, but how will you make that look aestically pleasing? Your current fixture seems to match the tank, where the LuminBrite may look rather industrial. Are you considering the black one I got with the glass insert? If you got a 20 x 20 reflector, and had the bulb 16" off the water, that would definitely give you the spread you need. The 16 x 16 reflector would be smaller to look at, and I still think it needs to be up high. This one one thing you'll have to install, stand back and see how you like it, mainly because you are not using a canopy to hide it and thus have to deal with light spilling out into the room.
