New macro tank for growing food for main tank???

Hi, I wanted to ask a couple of questions regarding the setup of a new 29 g macro tank. I want this to be a macro tank that includes several mushrooms/ricordia with a few fish like a bangaii cardinal, mandarin, some type of goby, etc., not exceeding 4-5 fish with a few snails, 2-3 blue leg hermits, and 2-3 peppermint shrimp. I'll likely get 20 lbs of cured porous LR or even dry rock and about a 3-4" SB.

I want this to serve as a food source for the herbivores in my main coral tank when I get it built as well as be something different and fun to keep. I was thinking of Botryocladia and Gracilaria as the food source for the herbivores in the main tank. Then keeping ochtodes, laurencia, codium, maybe a few mushrooms, ricordea and gorgonians just to get a nice mix. Maybe I have to much I want to put in here but I would appreciate some feedback on compatibility of these macros and corals, etc. As well as any other critiques on my plan.

I plan to run a typical reef type setup (equipment wise). This includes a CPR overflow, sicce 1.5 return pushing about 150 gph at 40" head, likely a hydor PHead, and a Maxxspect Razor 10K light. Would I need to run a protein skimmer?

Protein skimmer is not necessary. IMO it is detrimental to biodiversity at the bottom of the foos chain, were the bacteria live.
The idea of feeding harvested macro as a nutrient export mechanism will work well. I would think I would sell my Red Grapes instead of feeding it to the tangs.

Why would you sell the red grapes instead of feeding to Tangs? Do they not like it?

Is a 2-3" SB ok?

What about 10k LED lights?

My tangs love botryocladia, but it's not a fast grower. If you want a quick growing food source, ulva is a good choice, though not very pretty.
I have LEDs on my tank, and my macro does quite well. None of the species you listed need crazy amounts of light, so you should be fine.
Most algaes attatch to LR just as well, so sand isn't even necessary, just an aesthetic preference.

I also thought about putting some ricordea, mushrooms, and zoas in as well.Any issue with these as long as I keep the zoas and ricordea slightly higher in the tank so they can get a little more light?

From my perspective, Red Grapes are too valuable as a cash crop to feed to tangs.
I would use 1" of Florida Crushed Coral. Your 10K lights are fine.

No issue with the corals, but mushrooms and zoas don't need to be higher up, they'll stay brighter in lower light. If you get photosynthetic gorgonians, they'll need to be higher in the tank :)
