well after my yellow tang took out my other mandrin that i had i was so sad to see it go..one of my favorite fish that i have kept..i traded away the yellow tang and i have been on the look for a new mandarin..i got one and it was a dud...so i had my eye on this one for sometime and got it...it is a very nice female..and as soon as it hit the water it was on the hunt and has been since...i was glad to see that because the last one just sat around and i am sure it was cynaide caught...this one just looks better but i got my fingers crossed that it will make it..i know i am by no way in the clear but i had the other for a couple years and it was nice and fat..just that tang killed it...i had a target before but got the other kind this time..enough talk here are the pics!!!

You are good. If they hunt, they are going to make it. If you are putting that in the 180, you might consider trying to find a male as well. Nice photography and gorgeous fish.

good luck. I love these fish. I like to think of them as the parrot of the fish world given their gorgeous colors. I have one in my 180 for quite sometime now. should do well in there. enjoy.

thanks everyone..and yes steve i am going to look for a male now...i don't see the females that often but males all the time

The females are much more rare; I am not really certain why. I looked long and hard before I eventually got one that was healthy.

i have noticed that..i see more females of the target mandarins more than these..i see males all the time the trick is just finding one healthy

beautiful fish.. i had one for about a year and it just went missing... im blaming my carpet nem... i too am also on the look out for a healthy speciment

here are a couple new pics..been hard to catch one she is always among the rocks hunting for pods..plus i got a pic of a new chalk bass that i got a few weeks ago

I've always wanted a mandarin but was never sure how mature a tank would need to be before it could support one. Any suggestions since you all seem to keep them?

For some reason I thought the female's weren't allowed to be caught?

I'd get a male too, that'd be awesome to watch them together!

I would say a tank that's been up for a year and you see pods all over rocks and glass then you should be good to go.

there is no rule or law about capturing and importing females. They are rare because their coloration is not as vibrant as the males. They can easily be kept in the appropriate tank for years. However, carpet anemones and mandarins don't mix well.

Yep, and I would also limit any other fish that could compete with the mandarin for pods like a six line wrasse or yellow coris wrasse.

beautiful fish, great photos!

Does anyone know if there are tank raised ones available for sale?

as of right now there is only one person who has successfully raised them to adult hood in captivity. he however did this with wild zooplankton... so they are all wild caught.

here is the link to the ones raised though
