New Mantis Shrimp

I can't view the pic, or any other on this forum? Anybody know why that is or what I have to do to fix that?

That'd be great.

Thanks,
JJ.

Im not really sure of its sex but its awsome. how do you sex them?

I always thaught the OS w/ the green shells were male and the yellowish shells were the females, but I'm not really sure.

The only sure way to sex an O. scyllarus is to look at the genital structures. Males have a pair of gonopods (penis) hanging down from the inside of the base of the last pair of walking legs. Females have a figure-8 shaped gonopore (two holes) on the midline of the ridge between the first pair of walking legs. About a year ago I posted a series of photos on a thread titled "Stomatopod Sex" or something like that. You should be able to search for it.

Color is a reasonable indicatior of sex, but not always accurate. Large males are nearly always emerald green and females are rarely that color, but average sized males can also have the olive color. Very small animals of either sex can be yellowish. There are also differences in the polarization patterns of males and females but you would need your polaroid sunglasses to see it.
