It looks like the custom fuges my old lfs use to sell but moré awesome. Have you ran water through yet? Looks cool, I'll be tagging along. I want to see it complete with the peacock and all. What else aré you planning to put in there?

I'm going to be building a tank soon but for a different kind of mantis. (snicker, snicker) XD

Heres the progress so far. I used water from my other reef tanks to help the cycling process along with new water. so far so good. Going to add substrate tonight or tomorrow afternoon. Need to gather some LR too.

The peacock I ordered is coming in today. If they turn out to be peacocks, I maybe be able to supply them across the internet if anyones interested. My LFS can get them in bulk apparently. I told him I can help sell them. I'm still waiting on them to come in today to make sure they are truly peacocks.

i'm going to guess chiragra...

LOL good call both of you, It was a Gonodactylus chiragra, and they shipment got held over night at the airport. With the winter weather everything was stressed. When I went to go pick it up I told him right away it was no peacock but I got it anyway. When I got in the car and started driving home the mantis started laying on its back and curling. I knew then it wasn't going to make it but i tried to put it in a bucket and slowly start adding some water from my reef tank. When he was in the bucket it started hitting itself with his clubs. after a few strikes he stopped moving. I picked it up and noticed that the part on his club that projects forward and can spear was logged in the pleopods. He stabbed himself and committed suicide..... When i picked him up he also felt somewhat soft. Like he just molted or was in the process of molting. I brought him back and wrote down to order me another but to make sure its bigger then 4 inches and is thick. I should the guy at my LFS roys list and showed im the spices i want and the species he ordered. I just decided to get some damsels and a new peppermint for me reef. I'm waiting for the next shipment for a new peacock.

this should be patent lol. i thing the way its set up is a amazing idea. ill bet people have done it before but you are the first i saw. i will keep this in mind if i ever do another tank. it makes great use of the space a mintis miight not need to benifit its life!!!!!

kudos on the build

matt

I usually feed 1-2 times a week. Depending on species, smashing species i stick to marsh crabs, stone crab, gastropods, and mollusca. small glass shrimp are awesome as well.

water has to be good-very good baised on species and where they came from to re-inact their natural habitat. lower intertidal species are hardier IMO, try a N.wennerae if your new to aquariums

tomorrow I'm hopefully getting a O. scyllarus from the same LFS that sent me a G.chiragra
last time. Will send pictures once they come in. I'll try to photograph all the stomatopods.

I got It, Looks like a girl but still gota check the legs. 2.5" female deff a peacock. Smallest one I ever saw. Only cost 35 bucks. In the process of drip alcamation, I think im going to let it drip for a few hours since the fish shipment got held over night at the airport not taking any risks. I'll post pictures ones my roommate wakes up, my cellphone screens cracked so its hard to use as a camera. wish me luck!

LUCK to You!

I know what you are going through. I just acclimated a little 3 inch Peacock yesterday. I live in MN where is hovering right around 0 degrees F, and the little girl (I think) sat in the Fed Ex truck for 24 hrs before I got her. Honestly, I thought the mantis had died in shipping when I finally had a chance to lay eyes on it.

I floated the bag for 45 mins in my tank just to equalize the temp, then proceeded to do a 2 hr drip acclimation to balance the pH and salinity. I took longer than LiveAquaria recommends, but I think it paid off.

As I type this, I can hear a snapping coming from the other room. One of my hermits is definitely having a bad day right now.

yah taking your time is key with peacocks or with anything. Saves you so much trouble in the long run. Shes already building her burrow. I had 4 damsels in the tank and two of them went over the wall into the sump side because the mantis scared them. The second she hit the bottom she went after the blue devil damsel LOL wish she would have just killed it. I put a hermit in there from my reef and she took it into her burrow. I'm working on some pictures and im going to go down to the local docks and catch some marsh crabs and some grass shrimp. I also need to feed my N.wennerae and P.ciliata Maybe my pistol shrimp too if hes lucky.

lol you're building a fish room. Watch out! Before long you'll be taking out furniture to house more tanks. Awesome setup with the peacock btw. Makes me want to set up a tank right now with my nonexistent money. :p
