New Mantis Tank

Well the peacock tank is finally in the works. I just picked up a 29g Tru-Vu, Penguin 330 HOB, heater, and 50/50 NO light fixture for $75 off Craigslist. I have a stealth heater im going to use in the glass ones place, i have plenty of sand, and about 80 lbs of rock to work with, so im set. Ya!

Well i plan to get the old stuff cleaned out and set it up today. All my rock has been cleaned, dried, and put in storage as i did not know when i would need it again, so its gonna be a while. As for Sammy the Smithii, he can be photogenic from time to time.

Heres the tank cleaned up and awaiting sand and rock.

I let mine build his own. Someone on here had a burrow along the backwall with exits along the sides of the tank. Liverock covered the rest of it.

Another option is to coat the outside of your PVC pipe with superglue and roll it in some dry sand from the bottom of your tank so that it blends in to the tank and doesn't look like a piece of pipe.

At least 1" but I think I would go with 1.25 or 1.5. When buying the superglue get a gel version. The thinner ones are a bear to work with and don't tend to grab as much sand. When I did mine this way I would rub glue on the out side and then pour sand over it (had the thinner kind of glue to start). When I ran out of that I found a bottle of thickened stuff i got from my LFS and with that I would roll the pipe in the sand.

Well if its cool enough outside today, im going to rinse some sand and get it ready for the tank. Maybe start placing some rock in as well.

hey Crawling68, NICE!, my mantis is in a 29gallon truvu and it works out well. I see your in the bay area =). I used about 2 inch arag sand bed with a 1 inch layer of crushed coral and shells. I will post updated pics soon, but here are some pics of my tank in its earlier stages. The only diff now is i added a toad stool leather, upgraded my lighting to a orbit dual 64watt pc fixture and i also added a paired Carkii clowns.

Well im keeping the original light, ive done the reef thing, and im done. I might put some GSP's and shrooms in there as ive plenty to spare but thats about it. I not going to get to the sand today as im hiding out in my AC'd ffice with my mantis right now, well, maybe later. LOL.

lol i have two fans blowing at my tank at home to keep it cool. Originally i had a 60gal reef, but with work and kids its hard to keep it maintained. I originally just had a coral life T5 hood for the 29 but then i decided i may keep a few LPS so i upgraded to the orbit. I was a bit torn because peacocks prefer lower light but he still seems ok. As a matter of fact he still comes out and forages quiet often.

I actually have a set of tongs that are about 18". The tip can be removed and replaced with a pair of stainless blades if you like.
