I have no problem doing it, but my fiance is still a little scared of them.

its not so much sticking the hand in the tank, hell ive hand fed my mantis on a few occasions. They come in handy when you need to get a hold of uneaten food and etc.

I actually used silicon to attach random pieces of sand and rubble to the tips of my ~2.5" PVC piping (it is really black ABS plastic) by rolling them aruond in it, unfortunatly, i believe Boris has outgrown it a couple molts ago, and she has now turned the rear of the tank into her new burrow, I moved some of the overhanging rocks around to provide more shade, and she has dug up under some of the "pillar" rocks to make a darker burrow as well...(I dont have any new pics of this..)
