New Maxi Mini

To start off, I have done research and have wanted a Maxi Mini for quite a while now.

I would like to ask for advice in how I should care for it. It came from another established tank and went right into my DT which is a 28g JBJ Nano. It looks very healthy and I drip acclimated it into my tank last night for about 3 hrs before it went in and I shut all pumps off for 2hrs before turning on only my return pumps. It moved immediately onto a rock and was still there this morning. It seems nice, happy and spread out like normal with no gaping and great coloration.

I would like to keep it nice and healthy and would appreciate suggestions on what others have done to keep their Maxi Mini's happy?

For a little backround on my tank, it is an established Nano and has been up and running for about 3 years now. I am running open top with a AI Hydra26 and have mostly LPS, some SPS and a Crocea Clam. My parameters are as follows:

SG=1.026
Temp 76-77
ALK=7.8-8.3
CA=420
MAG=1360-1380
NO3=Undetectable
PO4=2-3ppm with Hanna

Every few weeks or so I give mine a good chunk of silverside, plus I always target feed. Although I don't think I need to it just gives me piece of mind.

You don't need to feed them since they do great on light alone, especially in a small tank it'll just wreck your water quality. "Target feeding" can also be problematic for water quality. The important thing to keep in mind is that if something is photosynthetic you can feed it, but you never need to feed it. The majority of new hobbyists don't make that connection and spend a lot of time fighting algae issues as a result.

On a side note, as far as acclimation for maxi minis just float them to temp acclimate them toss them in the tank. These are one of the lowest maintenance things you can add to a tank, don't get sucked into the trap of thinking you need to feed photosynthetic tank inhabitants, LFS just push that bs to sell more food and hobbyists push it because they heard it from their LFS.

If they're photosynthetic why do mine hate light so much? :P One of them now lives in a cave and I think the other will be joining it soon.

I have heard that they are fine as long as they get enough light. I also heard that you can supplement with occasional feeding for growth. Would this be correct?

You can, but I'd start slowly and go light so you're not fighting an algae outbreak for 6 months. Personally I don't feed my maxi minis unless I'm planning on fragging them the week after.

Maxi mini is very easy to keep. Mine is very sticky and eats with gusto. Maxi can take very strong light.

Mine only comes out during light hours, but then it literally stretches towards it. As soon as the lights go down it starts retracting back into it's hole and during the night it's really small.

BTW: I like these guys because they are the perfect hosts for all my anemone crabs an shrimp and it's just cool to watch them. As soon as my new tank is set up I will add a bunch of them.

Personally...I hate them! Had 2 that ate 4 fish. Fish got spooked and bumped into the nems, that's all it took [emoji45] Sticky lil bugger! Even more risky in a smaller tank. Which mine was at just 26g.

Silversides have been know to kill nems. Not much quality control and so you maybe feeding spoiled fish to your nems

Wow I'd never heard that before, yet another reason to feed cleaner pellet food instead though :)

For my nems I feed them Fauna Marin LPS pellets, little bit goes a long way.

I was actually looking at getting the same LPS pellets for my LPS. It would be a bonus to be able to feed the Nem to. Do you use the Med or Lrg Pellets? I can't really get a definite size on either so I don't know what size to get. Are they like 1mm in size or ????. I am looking at feeding my frogspawn, acan, trachy and possibly the new Maxi Mini if possible.

Thanks

Yes. They sell the exact same pellets in both Med and Lrg size pellets. Don't know how big they are though. How big are your pellets?
