I just bought a Mccosker Flasher wrasse a couple of days ago. Never saw him on the first day but the second day as soon as I put some food in the tank it was out an about. It seems to be eating anything I offer.

Does anyone have one ? Any recommenations on their care?

As long as you obtained a healthy specimen they are easy to keep and feed well on most foods. Keep your tank covered with a 1/4 inch netting as they are guaranteed to jump and will find the smallest opening. It may be necessary to obtain another male or several females for them to keep their color.

Oh..I speak from experience, they JUMP and jump right out of the tank. I had my tank covered, apparently not well enough. GL with him, beautiful fish!

Yeah like most wrasses, they like to jump. Mine jumped right before my eyes as I was staring into my tank... couldn't believe it!

anyone know why is so difficult to get females? i've been to a few LFS and they all say it will be difficult if even possible to get them. also anyone have first hand exp/success with keeping other types of flasher wrasse to help maintain colors and flash more? dont mean to hijack thread but i think it would good info for many of us.

Very easy to care for, they do jump and are very curious. If you want them to flash more add another peaceful flashing wrasse. They will flash eachother wild :P. Just make sure the tank is big enough for them to have there own space.

I didnt know this.. i got the female at the same day, i bought the male.

I had my wrasse for about 3 months now with nothing to keep him from jumping out, he comes close to the top at times then flaring his fins out as he races across the tank, its a 210 tank deep 29, so maybe this help?

females for flasher wrasses are hard to obtain and rare but not impossible. to make things worst, almost all female flashers look IDENTICAL. and cannot be differentiated by physical appearance. so the biggest clue will be the shipment location.

even then, many species overlap.

female mccoskers are not impossible to get. i have seen them for sale in my country but no where as common as the males.

unlike fairy wrasses, flasher wrasses do not lose colour much in captivity. but having females will make them flash more often. even then, males of other species do a good job in initiating flashing behavior.

oh and females are usually difficult to obtain because they are drab and very dull, and are less easy to sell than males.

therefore collectors usually only go after the more beautiful males.

in the wild, the females far outnumber the males in the harem.

Wow, I just want to thank everyone for the great info.
I am very happy with this little guy but a little dissappointed that I did not buy one sooner. I don't know why I was under the impression that they were hard to keep.
