MANTISMAN
G'day all =)

Got a phone call from a supplier/collector friend of mine today =) he told me that the "zebra" they caught was being shipped up tonight arriving 6:45pm, so sure enough I was there awaiting before hand =) after getting the box home and opening it up to find a healthy swimming mantis I began to inspect closer.... it is quit large between 250mm-300mm easily and this time I am confident in 2 things.

First: Its a Lysiosquillina Maculata (the eyes look exactly the same, pattern shades etc. as opposed to L.sulcata/Morgoth.

Second: It is indeed a HE, I saw his....'twig n dangle berries'

Now for a name....

More Pics & Vids to come! :lol2:

The Eyes!

The Eyes!

The Eyes between this new large zebra mantis along with Morgoth the other zebra I already have are quite different...hence another easy way of identifying between L.maculata & L.sulcata.

Morgoth (L.sulcata) - Pure White no patterns.

New L.mac - Dark background with white/yellow dots all over for pattern.

More to come :lol2:

G'day all

Mae a short 2min flick of the male L.mac digging, his hole is MUCH wider then Morgoth the L.sulcata.

Anyways, beautiful mantis! Congrats :D

Thanks for your interest fellas =) he has seated in well to the tank and with 5mins of being in the tank he began constructing his burrow!

Now this monring I awoke to him completely submerged in his burrow working on its lower depths.

He is significantly larger then Morgoth

He looks great Kharn. Showing off his booty in the video too haha.

Are you looking for a artful name? Call him Equus!

I actually go for personality mixed with other things....this L.mac is still very wild, show interest in every fish that swims by whilst Morgoth isn't really phased by the fish any more.

Considering his size mixed in with his wild behaviour I WAS/AM leaning towards the name .... 'Leviathon'

Leviathon, the master of burrowing and maze design. Has he eaten yet?

As far as I am concerned he hasen't eaten since he was caught since who knows how often he ate in the wild. (i've done my reading on wild ones).

Having said that....within 5mins of him being in the tank he began to dominate the other animals within his side of the enclosure....a large scopas tang whom I am holding for a mate of mine that is reluctant to come and pick it up managed to get caught in this side with the new L.mac along with a couple of Humbugs, Sun the blenny has found a way from compartment to compartment so it too appears at random.

Within 5mins of the L.mac being in the tank it started to show its threatening display and everytime the scopas / humbugs swam near him, he would lash out and hit them, far far far more aggressive then Morgoth the L.sulcata and he is also a lot more active then Morgoth being that within the first 5-10mins he had a very established hole in the sand whilst it took Morgoth over an hour.

I just hope I have partitioned off this tank well enough to separate Morgoth and L.mac no matter there both only in there for a week tops, getting my temporary housing tank built this week then they will go in there until I can remove my current large tank and get the huge system in place that I have planned :frog:

That's a very nice male! Nice to see you got a strong and active one! Congrats 'Kharn'! ...and 'Leviathan' seems a nice suiting name for him, i think :)

I wish I could just stop in and see all your craziness! Every week a new mantis is would seem. Also I like to help build a large mantis system would be fun. I think your new guy is handsome.

Thanks for the comments MantisO_o and TundraGuy!

He is a fit and healthy specimen having already constructed a burrow he is now on full guard!

Also....

I do have another mantis coming in and ..... possibly 3 more to add to the other one but I have to take all 3 at once of this other guy.... so I asked if he would hold them a couple weeks until my 'ultimate multi mantis setup' is complete!
